RESEARCH STUDY ON autonomy in socio-culturally diverse advanced cancer care settings

Dear colleague,

Autonomy is an important value in healthcare. Almost all nurses will agree that treatment cannot be administered to competent patients without their informed consent. However, patient involvement in decision making can be a complicated matter, particularly in the case of advanced cancer patients. When patients belong to ethnic minorities socio-cultural factors can play an important role in this process. Through this research study we want to better understand these socio-cultural factors. The long-term goal of this project is the development of a framework which will help physicians and nurses to better involve patients in decision making.

For the above mentioned research study we are searchingoncology and palliative care nurses who are willing to be interviewed. To be eligible for this study, you need to be: 1) an RN; and 2) have at least 2 years of experience caring for cancer patients within oncology or palliative care in the US.Eligible participants preferably have some experience with the treatment of patients of South-Asian origin (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bhutan, or Maldives).

In the interview you will be asked to give your view on involvement of patients in decision making, and tell about your attitude to and experience with patients of South-Asian origin. You will also be requested to discuss a hypothetical case. Interviews can be expected to last no longer than 45 minutes.

People who are selected for an interviewwill be eligible to participate in a lottery for an iPad mini. Since this is an explorative qualitative study the number of people who will be interviewed will be limited. Thus, only a small number (approximately 60) will participate in the lottery and the chances to win are high.
