RESEARCH PROJECT - PART ONE: To Kill a Mockingbird

PURPOSE: to help you understand the novel more fully as a result of background research. As we read the novel, you will continue to research your topic AND record references to the topic in the novel.

You will be working alone, in pairs, or in groups of three.

PROCESS: Preliminary Research and References to Topic in Novel

STEP 1: Do preliminary research in the library period. Use at least THREE SOURCES. Everyone must complete the ‘Sources Chart.’

STEP 2: Present your preliminary research in a brief discussion (1-2 MINUTES) in class. Try to include all aspects of the topic listed on the topic sheet. Each member of the group will present the information in a brief summary that highlights the most important facts concerning your topic (aim for SIX FACTS per group- regardless of group size).

STEP 3:

A. Find as many references as possible to your topic in the novel.

·  Record these on the ‘References Chart’ provided and add to it on an on-going basis, as we read the novel.

·  Include quotations from the text and page numbers.

·  Explain the importance of your topic to the plot of the novel and to the lives of at least THREE characters in the novel.

B. As you continue reading the novel, more aspects of the topic will arise. You will also add to your research on an on-going basis. We will return to the library and labs for further research time at least one more time. Keep track of your research sources (URLs and website information; book titles, author and publication information) on the ‘Source Chart” provided.

PRODUCTS:

PART ONE: An oral presentation in which you show how your research topic connects to the text.

You will:

A) introduce and explain your research information,

B) discuss references to the topic in the novel (3-5 quotations)

-quote from the novel and explain the ways in which your research has helped you understand more about each of these sections in the novel

C) explain how knowing more about the topic has enhanced your understanding of the novel, the characters, and the events.

PART TWO: A visual media product (poster, prezi, powerpoint) to use as a visual aid as you explain your topic and how knowing more about it has enhanced your understanding of the text.
