Research Paper Process: Works Cited
Format of the page: 1” margins all four sides; double space all Print: Times New Roman, 12 wpi
Right side header: This will be page 5 for you, inside the 1” margin print your last name, a space, and then 5
(for me this would look like this: Coane 5 )
Title on this page: Works Cited (note, there isNO word “Page” in the title)
Title (Works Cited) starts on the first line of the page (do not put extra blank lines above title). There are NO extra blank lines between title and first entry; there are NO extra blank lines between entries.
The first line of each entry is a full line – type till the end of the line; if information needs to go on a second line, the second line is indented one tab (5 spaces) – type to the end of the second line, IF there is still more information to list, the 3rd line will also be indented 1 tab (5 spaces).
What goes on this page?
In your paper, where you have parenthetical documentations (documentation in parenthesis) you list each of those sources on this page. List each source ONLY ONCE even though you may have used several documentations from thatsource.(Remember, you must document from at least 3 sources)
Please check your Research Paper for documentation. Remember, the paper must contain the following: 1 BlockQuote (quotes that are OVER 4 lines when typed), 3 – 4 Quotes and2 –3 Paraphrases. (Remember, Block Quotes and Quotes must have lead-in phrases to introduce the quoted material (ex: According to Dr. Smith, “sugary drinks are responsible for 12% of the deaths in New York City every year”(1). (According to Dr. Smith --- is the lead-in phrase)
Basic set up for entries:Editor, author, or compiler name (if available).Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.
- Editor or author’s name ( lastname first, then firstname) with a period after firstname (if none given, title will be 1st)
- Article’s title in quotation marks with a period after the title, before the ending quote marks
- Name of website (in italics), period.
- Name of institution/organization/ project hosting the site were info was (sponsor or publisher) –period at end
- Date the information was published (give what information is available, if only a year, cite that; if a year and a month, cite both; if day, month, year, cite all)– if no date, use: n.d.
- Web. (yes, there is a period after the word Web)
- Date (approximate)you first read the information (approximate) – format: 16 October 2013 (period after this)
- There is NO NUMBER in front of any entry
- Put entries in Alphabetical Order
IF there is no author for an article, use title to alphabetize
IF 2 authors – the first author’s name is listed: lastname, firstname, and firstname lastname
Adams, John, and Jane Campbell.
If 3 authors –
Adams, John, and Jane Campbell, William Brown.(yes, a comma after 1st person’s name)
Basic rules
- Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research paper. It should have the same one-inch margins and last name, page number header as the rest of your paper.Does NOT count as a page in paper.
- Label the page Works Cited (do not italicize the words Works Cited or put them in quotation marks) and center the words Works Cited at the top of the page.
- Double space all citations, but do not skip spaces between entries.
- Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations by 0.5 inches (1 Tab) to create a hanging indent.
