RESEARCH PAPER OUTLINE—

In what ways did social issues, court cases or individual research influence the experience of the American people?

Use the template provided to complete the outline for your research paper. Type the required information into the appropriate boxes. If you use information from a source, you must include an internal citation! See Appendix C of your research packet for help in making internal citations.

I. INTRODUCTION. Your introduction should spark your reader’s interest in your topic and establish a clear purpose for your paper through your thesis.

  1. HOOK. Your hook should provide a quote from one of your sources,

startling facts or statistics, or a provocative question that sparks your reader’s interest.


B. BRIDGE. Your bridge should connect your hook to your thesis statement in your

own words. Why is this issue so important? Why should your reader care?


C. THESIS. Unless you have changed it, type the same thesis that you typed in your

Thesis and Works Cited Form.


II. BODY PARAGRAPH 1: Background Information about Issue/Topic. Your first body paragraph should introduce your reader to the background of this issue. Include facts to expose your reader to the causes of the issue.

  1. TOPIC SENTENCE. Your topic sentence should provide a general description of the topic.


B. SUPPORTING DETAILS. Include Quotes and Paraphrasing (at least 2—preferably

more) of facts about the country and the causes of the issue from your sources. Be

sure to include internal citations (see Appendix C of research packet). You can save

your own ideas and commentary for the rough draft. You may expand the box if

necessary.


III. BODY PARAGRAPH 2. Effect of Issue. Your second body paragraph should discuss one effect of the issue.

A. TOPIC SENTENCE. Your topic sentence should describe one specific effect of the

issue (should come directly from your thesis).


B. SUPPORTING DETAILS. Include Quotes and Paraphrasing (at least 2—preferably

more) of facts about this effect of the issue from your sources. Be sure to include

internal citations (see Appendix C of research packet). You can save your own ideas and commentary for the rough draft. You may expand the box if necessary.


IV. BODY PARAGRAPH 3. Effect of Issue. Your second body paragraph should discuss another effect of the issue.

  1. TOPIC SENTENCE. Your topic sentence should describe another specific effect of

the issue (should come directly from your thesis).


B. SUPPORTING DETAILS. Include Quotes and Paraphrasing (at least 2—preferably

more) of facts about this effect of the issue from your sources. Be sure to include

internal citations (see Appendix C of research packet). You can save your own ideas and commentary for the rough draft. You may expand the box if necessary.


V. CONCLUSION. Your conclusion should sum up your research and end with a bang!

  1. RESTATE THESIS. Restate the thesis that you stated in the Introduction.
  2. ENDING, DYNAMIC SENTENCE. End by providing another staggering statistic and/or issuing a challenge to your reader to be concerned about your topic.
