Objective and description of the project:
The research project examines informal and formal care resources as a specific form of social capital (‘social care capital’). It brings new insights to social capital research by focusing on gender and generation in the context of care. It studies the formation, usage and distribution of social care capital. Methodologically the project combines qualitative and quantitative approaches and produces comparisons at different analytical levels; those of individual/family, local, national and cross-national ones. The main assumption is that formal care institutions matter both for the formation of informal care capital and for the un/equal distribution of social care capital. Thus, one focus of the project is on the complex relations of trust and reciprocity typical not only to social networks in which informal care is produced but also to formal arrangements of care.
The objectives of the study are:
(1)To construct a social care capital index for testing and developing social capital theory in the context of care;
(2)to develop theoretical and empirical micro-level approaches for studying the interplay of informal and formal care capital;
(3)to apply the social care capital index for studying the patterns of social care capital at the national and local level;
(4)to construct national care capital patterns; and to contrast the Finnish model with other Nordic countries and especially with Italy.
The project leans on existing manifold international qualitative and quantitative comparative data sets and it will collect biographical interview data.
The project contributes to the development and critique of social capital theory from the viewpoint of care, gender and generations with reference to inequalities. It also produces policy recommendations to meet the increasing and diversified needs of care, which is one of the greatest challenges of the modern welfare societies.

Hankkeen tavoite ja lyhyt kuvaus:
Hankkeessa tutkitaan informaaleja ja formaaleja hoivaresursseja sosiaalisen pääoman erityisenä muotona (’sosiaalisena hoivapääomana’). Se tuo sosiaalisen pääoman tutkimustraditioon uusia alueita, ennen muuta hoivan ja perheen. Tutkimus lisää ymmärrystämme sosiaalisen pääoman synnystä, käytöstä ja jakautumisesta paitsi luokka- myös sukupuoli- ja sukupolvikehyksessä. Metodologinen lähtökohta on kvantitatiivisen ja kvalitatiivisen lähestymistavan yhdistämisessä ja vertailujen tekemisessä yksilö- ja perhetasolla sekä paikallisella, kansallisella ja kansainvälisellä tasolla. Keskeinen oletus on, että formaaleilla hoivajärjestelyillä on mitä tärkein merkitys informaalin hoivapääoman muodostumiselle ja sosiaalisen hoivapääoman epä/tasaiselle jakautumiselle. Yksi tarkoitus on tutkia niitä luottamuksen ja vastavuoroisuuden mekanismeja, jotka ovat edellytyksiä hoivapääoman ja siihen liittyvien sosiaalisten suhteiden muodostumiselle yhtä lailla perheen ja sosiaalisten verkostojen kuin julkisen sektorin piirissä.
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on:
(1)rakentaa sosiaalisen hoivapääoman indeksi, jonka avulla voidaan testata ja kehittää sosiaalisen pääoman teoriaa erityisesti hoivan kontekstissa;
(2)kehittää teoreettisia ja empiirisiä lähestymistapoja informaalin ja formaalin hoivapääoman vuorovaikutuksen tutkimiseksi mikrotasolla;
(3)soveltaa kehitettyä indeksiä sosiaalisen hoivapääoman mallien tutkimiseen kansallisella ja paikallisella tasolla;
(4)rakentaa kansallisia hoivapääoman malleja ja verrata Suomen profiilia muihin Pohjoismaihin ja erityisesti Italiaan.
Tutkimuksessa tukeudutaan olemassa oleviin laajoihin kansainvälisiin kvalitatiivisiin ja kvantitatiivisiin aineistoihin, joiden lisäksi tehdään elämäkertahaastatteluja.
Hanke kehittelee ja kritisoi sosiaalisen pääoman teoriaa hoivan, sukupuolen ja sukupolvien näkökulmista. Tutkimuksen eri vaiheissa kiinnitämme erityisesti huomiota eriarvoisuuteen sosiaalisen pääoman jakautumisessa. Hankkeen tuloksena tuotamme suosituksia tavoista, joilla voidaan vastata kasvaviin ja erilaistuviin hoivan tarpeisiin.
