C. Project Description

Please limit responses to all 10 questions in Section C to a total of 10 pages. (Do not include any confidential information.)

  1. Describe the problem to be solved by your proposed project.
  2. Describe how the specific research program that will benefit from use of World Community Grid’s infrastructure.
  3. How would the computed results ultimately benefit humanity and the world?
  4. Please describe any peer reviews your solution approach has received.
  5. Contrast your proposed solution approach with other possibly competing approaches.
  6. Describe the funding and resources you have available to complete the proposed research and leverage World Community Grid.
  7. Describe the specific experience and/or qualifications of both the investigators and the sponsoring organization(s) that will enable the successful completion of this project.
  8. Is your organization able to make the immediate results of the project available in the public domain to the global research community and host this information in a publicly accessible manner?
  9. In what timeframe would the computer programs to be used for the project be tested and ready for World Community Grid to modify for use on the grid?
  10. Estimate the total calendar time duration of the project, based on being able to use approximately 25% of the current grid power per the global statistics on Technical Description

Please limit responses to all 16 questions in Section D to a total of 10 pages. Please read the accompanying document "Overview of a Typical World Community Grid Project," which describes a typical World Community Grid project. Using this as a reference, please answer the technical questions below. (Do not include any confidential information.)

    1. What is the name of the computer program that will be used for the project?
    2. What are the names, origins and owners of the computer programs to be used for the project?
    3. What programming languages are the programs written in and under which operating systems have they been used?
    4. What is the licensing required for access to the source code, its use on a public grid and permission to make modifications?
    5. Has the software been used previously on a grid, cluster computer, or supercomputer?
    6. Please outline how the program accomplishes the desired task.
    7. Estimate the amount of total input data for the project and how much of that would be input to a typical work unit.
    8. Estimate the amount of total output data for the project and how much of that would be output of a typical work unit.
    9. How much of the input data is static and could be cached at the participating donor machines on World Community Grid?
    10. Estimate the amount of total CPU time (based on an average 2ghz machine) for the project and how long a typical work unit would take to process.
    11. Do the computer programs already have the means to checkpoint their state periodically during its processing?
    12. Estimate how much virtual memory is needed for processing a typical work unit and what fraction of that is the working set size.
    13. Estimate how much local disk space would be required to process a typical work unit, along with the size of the programs and all data involved.
    14. Is communication required during the processing of a work unit, or can the CPU processing be performed while disconnected from the Internet?
    15. Is the amount of CPU time required to process a typical work unit predictable?
    16. Can the input data be easily partitioned in different ways to adjust the average CPU time required for a work unit?
    17. Are any graphics display programs included that would be suitable for use in World Community Grid’s screen saver to provide potential volunteers with information about the work unit being processed?
