Why assess our teacher candidates?

The purpose of assessment is to help our teacher candidates become more effective and to provide a critical basis for self-evaluation and self-reflection. All teacher candidates are urged to accept and integrate suggestions for improvements in a professional, intelligent manner and to continually seek to improve their teaching through feedback and reflection.

Why use online assessment?

The College of Education is beginning the transition to online assessment for various reasons:

  • More accurate collection and easier analysis of data
  • Ability to provide more legible copies of assessments
  • Ease of distribution of assessment results to all parties
  • Cost efficiency: fewer forms to print and to return; less collection and filing of forms
  • Better for the environment – “BlueGoesGreen”
  • Ability to make better use of current technologies

What assessments will be submitted online?

The following schedule has been established for the implementation of online submission of the following assessments:

Semester / Assessment
Fall 2008 / Introductory Field Competency Assessment
Teacher Work Sample Level I
Fall 2009 / Preprofessional Field Competency Assessment
Teacher Work Sample Level II
Fall 2010 / Professional Internship Competency Assessment
Teacher Work Sample Level III

Do I have to submit my assessments online?

All COE faculty, adjunct faculty, clinical supervisors and cooperating teachers are strongly encouraged to submit their assessments online. Help is available through the Dean’s Office, the NCATE Office and the Teaching Performance Center (TPC). You can contact:

  • Pat
  • Melissa
  • Heather
  • Dr. Jo Hoffman

Paper NCR assessment forms will still be made available to you should you require them. Please contact the TeachingPerformanceCenter at 908-737-4185 for forms. However, we really do urge you to make the transition to online assessment.

How do I submit an online assessment?

All online assessments and associated documents will be accessed via the Teaching Performance Center (TPC) website at Click on “Online Assessment” on the left-hand side of the page.

How to submit an online Field Experience Competency Assessment

1) Cooperating teachers will receive a Field Experience Competency Assessment Worksheet in their packet at the beginning of the semester. (Additional copies of the form, if needed, can be downloaded from the TPC website on the Online Assessment page. Go to TPC website at Scroll down to the Cooperating Teacher section and click on “Online Assessment” on the left-hand side of the page.)

This worksheet should be shared with the field experience student to ensure that the studentis aware of the areas in which he/she will be assessed.

(This would be a good time to have each student complete the top portion of the worksheet! Be sure to get the student’s and supervisor’s email addresses.)

2)As in the past, assessment is ongoing throughout the semester.

3)At the end of the semester, the university supervisor and cooperating teacher should each complete a worksheet for the student and discuss their assessments with the teacher candidate.

4)At the end of the discussion, the student, cooperating teacher and university supervisor should sign aFinal Meeting Form(provided to the university supervisor) to indicate that the assessment was discussed. (The student’s signature does not infer agreement with the assessment.) The Final Meeting Form is returned to the TeacherPerformanceCenter by the University Supervisor.

5) The worksheetsare kept by the university supervisor and the cooperating teacher for their records. The worksheet is not returned to the TeachingPerformanceCenter.

5)The scores from the worksheet can now be entered online. The university supervisor and cooperating teacher each submit their own online assessment.
