Post:Staff Nurse

Accountable to:Service Manager

Reports to:Senior Staff Nurse

Location:Graham Anderson House, Glasgow

Main Purpose:

To lead, develop and supervise a team of Rehabilitation Support Workers.

Enabling, guiding and supporting people with brain injury in the performance of daily living functions and the development of personal skills and potential.

To develop, plan and implement individually tailored therapeutic programmes of care and rehabilitation.

Contribute to the service provision through the development and maintenance of high standards of clinical care and safety.

Main tasks and responsibilities

1.Patient Care

  • Ensure the team provide a high standard of care for all service users. Contribute to the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • To act as named nurse and advocate for designated service users; liaising closely with other key workers and professionals including report writing, assessments, and recording of information.
  • To participate in planning, implementation, evaluation and reporting of the progress and success of service users individual goals and objectives.
  • To provide individualised, holistic care and approach to service users and their carers.
  • Exercise sound clinical leadership by example and instruction.
  • Ensure that all policies/procedures are adhered to, including statutory and organisational policies/procedures, for example Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities, Adult Support and Protection, Whistle Blowing.
  • Promote effective communication with service users, relatives, and colleagues providing information and support to assist decision-making and be willing to advocate on the service user’s behalf.
  • Ensure that all staff are aware of the location and use of all emergency and resuscitation equipment, and understand the procedure to use if an emergency occurs.
  • Ensure that the custody and administration of drugs is in accordance with both the statutory obligations and those of the service.
  • In conjunction with the Service’s Mental Health Act Administrator, ensure that the legal and administrative requirements of the Mental Health Actare strictly adhered to.
  • Assist where indicated in the acceptance and administration of service users detained under the Mental Health Act.
  • Ensure that accurate records are kept on all service users in line with the N.M.C.’s guidelines.

Professional Development

  • Be accountable for own practice and take every reasonable opportunity to maintain and improve own knowledge and professional competence.
  • Responsible for NMC ‘Post registration, education and practice’ (PREP) requirements, and the maintenance of personal professional portfolio.
  • Demonstrate an ability to examine and reflect on own practice and to change practice appropriately following reflection.
  • Participate in annual performance reviews and work towards ensuring the achievement of personal goals/objectives.
  • Maintain an awareness of current nursing practice within the speciality of brain injury and demonstrate a commitment towards the enhancement of clinical practice.
  • Supervise, appraise and develop Rehabilitation Support Workers.

Quality Management

  • Participate in ensuring compliance to the requirements of statutory bodies and relevant minimum standards including Healthcare Improvement Scotland, Clinical Governance, Investors in People, Mental Welfare Commission, CARF, and national care standards for independent hospitals.
  • Develop, maintain and monitor the above quality standards, through the principles of clinical governance.
  • Ensure high standards of ‘customer care’ within the service by maintaining core values.
  • To maintain and monitor quality initiatives, including; standards of care, professional conduct and performance of the team
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of risk strategy to ensure safe working practices by assessing work practice and methods of self and others to ensure that clinical incidents/errors are avoided or minimised.
  • Report any accidents/incidents/complaints in line with local policy.
  • Be aware of individual responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and ensure the principles of any training in respect of Health and Safety and Safety at Work Act are followed, with particular emphasis on moving and handling, COSSH and principles of infection control.
  • Ensure that all duties are performed in accordance with Trusts policies and procedures.
  • Participate in formal and informal teaching of all staff, contributing to the development of an in-house training programme.
  • Ensure that routine housekeeping duties are carried out within the service.

Information Management

  • Ensure that confidential information is not disclosed about clients, staff, The Disabilities Trust, or the service, to any unauthorised member of staff, or to anyone outside the employment of Graham AndersonHouse.
  • To complete written records as required and to supervise the work of RSWs in creating accurate, timely and relevant data recording.
  • Contribute to the on-going maintenance and updating of service policies and procedures.
  • Any other reasonable duties falling within the role of staff nurse as may be delegated by the service manager, assistant service manager, head of care or senior staff nurse.

The role outlined is intended to reflect the key responsibilities of the jobholder, which may change to accommodate the needs of the unit. It will therefore be subject to periodic review.

The post holder will be operating within a 24-hour environment dealing with internal and external service users, staff, and other third parties.
