Lunchtime Sports and Play Leader

REPORTS TO: Head teacher and the Senior Leadership team

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Head Teacher

GRADE OF POSITION:Grade 3

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:To supervise, plan, lead and assist children in activities and games during lunchtimes both outdoors and indoors, whilst encouraging goodbehaviour and ensuring the safety and welfare of children.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITES AND TASKS:

The normal duties will usually include the following:

  1. To play with and support the children in the playground and encourage a variety of games and sporting activities.
  2. To ensure that children in the playground are safe and behave appropriately, and to ensure that there is no period when the playground is left unsupervised.
  3. To take reasonable precautions whilst in charge of the children to see that they do nothing that is likely to injure themselves or others.
  4. To ensure the proper use of games equipment when in use at lunchtimes
  5. To be responsible with others for the setting out and clearing up of play equipment
  6. To train and support pupil leaders so they can assist other children in playing a variety of lunchtime games
  7. In the event of inclement weather, to organise and oversee indoor activities for pupils.
  8. In the event of any injuries to the children to treat them if they are minor injuries, e.g. small cuts or grazes, and to report to the Welfare Officer and School Office more serious injuries.
  9. To follow accident reporting procedures at all times. To undertake First Aid training, if required and to ensure that training is up-to-date.In the event of a more serious incident, follow school procedures and refer the pupil to the First Aider in charge at the time.
  10. To take part in any relevant staff meetings and training, as and when appropriate

ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE / Successful experience playing and supervising children in any setting / Experience of planning playground games and activities
Work in a playgroup, school or pre-school setting, either paid or as a volunteer
QUALIFICATIONS / Good general standard of education / Any childcare and sports qualification
SKILLS / Ability to be organised and work on own initiative
Ability to stay calm in all situations and be a role model
Ability to think of, plan and supervise games that many children can join in together
Good Communication skills
Ability to speak, read and write fluently in English
Ability to work as part of a whole school team
Ability to encourage good manners and respect in children / First Aid qualification
DISPOSITION / Motivated by the desire to work with children and make lunchtimes an enjoyable and safe experience for children
Friendly, calm, with a sense of humour
Tolerant, patient, understanding
Ability to form positive relationships with staff and children / Confidence to offer suggestions that develop play and supervision activities
