Report from Specialty Training Board – Feb 2018

Workforce

CPT 2018.

Application for CT1 have increased from around 590 last year to around 707 this year – maybe as a result of ‘Choose Psychiatry ‘ campaign run by the college and funded by HEE.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Run through.

This is a new HEE development which has proved enormously successful with 94 applicants for 6 posts. Will await developments from England.

Selection and recruitment e.g. scoring, timetables

a)For CT1 there will be one English and one Scottish selection centre – all following a single GB ranking.

b)The recruitment team have approved the SRA bypass score implementation whereby any candidate with a score of 541 and above will not require a face to face interview. This scheme has been used successfully in GP and follows data analysed by the Work Psychology Group.

c)ST1 CAP run through pilot is being recruited for in England only – see above.

d)There are plans in 2019 to drop station 2 for ST4 recruitment and replace it with a more in-depth portfolio station. There will also only be one portfolio interview which will cover all specialties that the trainee applies for. This has been decided following review of data on the portfolio station, including the self assessment by Work Psychology Group.

Communications from Heads of Schools

a)The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has developed the Accreditation of Transferable Competences Framework to assist trainee doctors in transferring competencies achieved in one core specialty or GP training programme to another. This will save time for a trainee – up to a maximum of one year. Trainees who have successfully completed a minimum of one year training in the following specialties can have that training count towards Psychiatry. Core Medical Training, Paediatrics and Child Health, General Practice and Public Health

b)

This must be applied for at the point of application through National Recruitment.

More information can be found on the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges website.

Ongoing Business

Continued work is being carried out on proposal to increase exposure to Psychiatry at FY1 level. The project is being expanded to include GP trainees and a meting has been set up with the Foundation and Gp leads in February.
