Evaluation Criteria

The Peer Jury bases their grant recommendations on their assessment of the proven or potential merit of the application. In determining merit, the Jury uses the following evaluation criteria:

Artistic Criteria (weighted 70%)

  • the extent to which the project contributes to the development of the artist or to the artistic development of the organization
  • the extent to which the project contributes to an art form, an artistic process and/or the Edmonton arts community
  • consideration will be given to collaboration between artist(s) and organization(s)

Organizational Criteria (weighted 20%)

  • the capacity of participants to achieve the artistic goals of the project
  • the appropriateness of project budget
  • consideration will be given to collaborations between organizations

Edmonton-Specific Criteria (weighted 10%)

  • the project’s innovative contribution to Edmonton’s cultural life
  • the extent to which the project is responsive to Edmonton’s diverse population
  • consideration will be given to collaboration with community agencies

The jury makes grant recommendations based on its assessment and evaluation of each application. In the opinion of the jury, the applications below rated high on all evaluation criteria and the jury chose to allocate funding in the following manner:

Mile Zero Dance Society / The Parking Lot Project: Development, creation and performance of a new site-specific dance work. To be mounted and performed within a city parkade. / $5,000 / $5,000
Shadow Theatre / Cultural Interpretation, Composition and Recording for "Helen's Necklace": Incorporation of additional production elements for “Helen’s Necklace” including a cultural guide, a composer with strong or original training in traditional and contemporary Arabic music and music recordings by musicians accomplished in musical forms and instruments of the Middle East. / $4,500 / $4,500
Theatre Network / Playwright in Residence Pilot Project: To employ playwright Cathleen Rootsaert as Artist/Playwright in Residence at Theatre Network. The residency will include work on a three-person feature-length play called “Vain Expectations” as well as development of the monthly “Network StoryJam” program. / $5,000 / $4,000
Citie Ballet / Dance & Poetry Project: Four emerging choreographers and four experienced choreographers will choreograph to the poetry of Edmonton poet Gerald St Maur. The collaboration will include soundscape, costume, stage and lighting design and final performances. / $5,000 / $3,000
Writers Guild of Alberta / Write Around Alberta: To send 100 writers to 100 communities across the province to celebrate writers and writing. / $5,000 / $1,000
Total Funds Recommended / $22,500
Total Funds Available / $22,500

In cases where the full request is not recommended, it is the opinion of the jury that support at the recommended level will not jeopardize the success of the proposed project.

Applications were also received from the following organizations and were assessed by the jury. While recognizing the merit of the proposals, in the opinion of the jury, the projects proposed in applications from the following organizations did not rate as highly on the established criteria.

Fringe Theatre Adventures: Another First Impression: Creating a Welcoming Space for Fringe Theatre forYoung People Patrons

National Ice Theatre of Canada: Poetry in Motion

Sadhana Music and Dance Society: Rangoli: A Celebration for Alberta's Centennial

Additionally, an application from Edmonton Metis Cultural Dance Society was considered ineligible because the project took place prior to the date of application.

All grant recommendations are supported by all Jury members.
