  • Koleos is the brand’s premium large SUV;
  • Urban compact SUV Kwid on display as a show car;
  • New 1.0 and 1.6 SCe engines offer significant fuel economy and technology improvements.

At this year’s edition of the São Paulo Motor Show (SPMS), three Renault SUVs take center stage – Captur, Koleos and Kwid –, in addition to two all-new engines: the 3-cylinder, 1-liter SCe (Smart Control Efficiency) and the 1.6 SCe powertrain, both offering significant fuel economy improvements and driving pleasure.

“The three new SUVs are vital to keep our growth strategy in Brazil. The new products were designed bearing in mind Renault’s new global brand identity, with added connectivity to make customers’ lives easier”, says Fabrice Cambolive, president at Renault Brazil.

In the last two years, the SUV segment has almost doubled in the domestic market, jumping from 8% to 15%.

The new SUV family proudly flaunts Renault’s new brand identity, underpinned by a muscly bodywork, muscular exterior lines, and high ground clearance, in addition to shorter front and rear overhangs, excellent attack and departure angles.

The Captur is the first model of Renault’s all-new SUV family to be marketed in Brazil, with start of sales planned for February 2017 and pre-sales kicking off at the SPMS. In addition to its sensual and elegant design with two-tone paintwork, it offers the comfort of a true SUV with plenty of cabin space. An array of advanced technology features makes occupants’ lives easier, with added connectivity and hands-free controls. Standard items include electronic stability and traction control, four airbags, hill start assist, hands-free keycard, power-folding door mirrors, among others.

Recently exhibited at the Paris Motor Show, the Koleos is Renault’s premium large SUV that will offer a profusion of technology features in the domestic market, such as blind sport warning, and Bose audio system 8.7’’ multimedia screen.

The Kwid is an urban compact SUV that is on display as the Kwid Outsider Concept. Specially designed by the RDAL (Renault Design Latin America) for this edition of the SPMS, it flaunts versatility and robustness.

Renault’s powertrain reliability comes from the adoption of world-class F1 technologies that have yielded 12 titles in F1. Now, the carmaker is introducing its all-new 1.0 SCe and 1.6 SCe engines, whose technological advances result in fuel economy improvements and driving pleasure. For example, the new 1.0 SCe engine is a 3-cylinder aluminum powerplant equipped with DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft) and timing chain. Like the 1.0 SCe, the 1.6 SCe engine is equipped with the ESC (Energy Smart Management) system, a track-inspired technology that optimizes battery recharge. Both powertrains are made at the Ayrton Senna Complex, State of Paraná.

“Compared with their predecessors, the new 1.0 and 1.6 engines deliver combined-cycle fuel savings of up to 19% and 21% for the vehicles they power, respectively. Likewise, the ESM system that equips the recently updated 2-liter engine contributes to yield excellent results”, says MárcioMelhorança, General Manager of Powertrain Engineering at the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

New1.0 SCeand 1.6 SCe engines

Renault’s expertise as an engine manufacturer in Formula 1, winning 12 constructors’ titles and 11 drivers’ titles, has enabled the Group to develop a wide lineup of powertrain innovations that have played a part in bringing down the fuel consumption of production models. At this edition of the SPMS, Renault unveils the all-new SCe – Smart Control Efficiency –3-cylinder 1.0 and 4-cylinder 1.6 engines. Manufactured at the Ayrton Senna Complex, in Paraná, they are economic to run while offering cutting-edge technology and driving pleasure.

The 1-liter SCeis an all-aluminum engine thatoffers dynamic performance with fuel savings by up to 19% compared to its predecessor, and it delivers a maximum output of 82 hp running on ethanol and 79 hp on gas. Developed in Brazil as part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s new engine family, the powertrain is equipped with a DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft, one operating the intake valves and the other one operating the exhaust valves), an innovation in the local market’s entry segment. The 1.6 SCe engine is also more powerful and delivers 118 hprunning on ethanol and 115 hp on gas when equipping the Sandero and Logan lineup, and 120 hp on ethanol and 118 hp on gas when equipping the Duster and Duster Oroch, while saving up to 21% in fuel.

Another noteworthy evolution in terms of fuel economy is the adoption of an electrically powered hydraulic steering, which adds driving comfort with less maneuvering effort. The presence of a maintenance-free timing chain also contributes to reducing running costs, and the Energy Smart Management (ESM) system is a F1-inspired technology that recovers braking and deceleration energy, thus optimizing efficiency.

Sandero and Logan are now equipped with the Stop&Start system that automatically shuts down and restarts the engine to reduce the amount of time the engine spends idling, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Formula1car and F1 Energy engine

Renault has been committed to Formula 1 for over 40 years. In 1977, it introduced the first-ever turbocharged car to F1. In 2016, Renault is back to Formula 1 with its very own team, with the Renault R.S.16 chassis. Now, the Renault Sport Formula One Team can be seen at close quarters at the SPMS.

Yellow and black are Renault’s distinctive colors that date back to the beginning of its heritage in motorsports. The V6 turbocharged RS01 that made its debut in 1977 sported the very same colors, and the R.S.16 pays homage to its exceptional legacy.

Formula 1 is the ultimate expression of passion for motor racing. This vibrant passion is translated into Renault’s brand signature, “Passion for Life”, while Formula 1 racing activities are used to showcase the technological advances transferred to production vehicles, for the benefit of motorists.
