Nomination Process

Nominations for Tehama County Teacher of the Year may be made by fellow teachers/colleagues, current students, administrators, parents of a student or other individuals connected to a school. Applications can be obtained from the county superintendent of schools office in Red Bluff (1135 Lincoln Street). More than one teacher can be nominated from a given school.

Nomination forms and supporting statements need to be submitted no later than Friday,September 13to Larry Champion, Tehama County Superintendent of Schools, P.O. Box 689, Red Bluff, CA 96080.

Qualifications

Nominees should be exceptionally skillful and dedicated teachers in any state-approved or accredited school, teaching at any grade level, pre-kindergarten through grade 12, who are planning to continue in an active teacher status. Community college and university teachers are ineligible, as are administrative and supervisory personnel such as principals and guidance counselors.

The major purpose of this recognition is to honor the contribution of classroom teachers.

Criteria

  • Minimum of three (3) years classroom teaching experience
  • Functioning currently as a full-time teacher (part-time or shared contract teachers are ineligible).
  • Command the admiration and respect of students, parents, and co-workers
  • Be an active participant in the affairs of the school and the community
  • Possess clearly demonstrated leadership skills
  • Be an articulate and poised spokesperson for the education profession
  • School benchmark data indicates that this teacher has a high percentage of students at the proficient level in either English Language Arts or Mathematics.

While all of the above criteria are to be considered, the most important quality is a superior ability to inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities as demonstrated by exemplary student achievement.

Awards

  • All nominees will receive a congratulatory letter from the Tehama County Superintendent of Schools and the President of the Tehama County Education Foundation
  • The Teacher of the Year will receive the Golden Apple Award and a $500 check that is awarded at the Annual Farm City Night in the fall.

Screening Selection

The screening committee, appointed by the Tehama County Education Foundation, will screen all nominees for adherence to criteria. Semifinalists will be interviewed and the committee will observe in their classrooms. Up to three teachers of the year can be selected based on applications and qualifications. One selection may be made from each level (elementary, high school, and alternative education). Feature Teachers are automatically nominated.

The Tehama County Teacher of the Year will be provided consultant and clerical support by the Tehama County Department of Education and will be given release time to put together the California Teacher of the Year application packet.
