Visit by Taxation Bowlers

Please note this visit will be on Wednesday evening, February 14. Bowling in mufti will start at 7pm followed by a light supper at evening’s end. Cost per person is $10. Please add your name to the list in the clubroom. This event is always an enjoyable social bowls competition and, as host, it is important that CoHBC is well represented.

Monthly Dinner

Our next CLUB DINNER will be on Friday, March 2.

Over the last two years the Club dinners on a Friday have been very popular and it has been great to see so many of our members and their friends enjoying a meal and spending time together.

In the previous newsletter it was suggested that the workload be shared by others, with perhaps two or three people getting together to undertake responsibility for these dinners. There is a roster on the noticeboard for those willing to take on the responsibility of a dinner.

For the March dinner, Gail, Mary, Hugh and Paul have added their names to the roster. Come on folks, which month could you undertake to do a club dinner?

The Friday night dinners have been very popular, let's keep them going!!

A big thank you to everyone who helped with the preparation and clean up of our dinner on February 2. It was good to see over 40 club members and their friends enjoying time at the club.

Reports on Recent Events

Tuesday night Pennant

Thank you to all players, helpers and spectators who were involved in the 2017/18 season of Night Pennant. Our club hosted three of the nights, two of which meant 72 players were on site. A special thank you to Lesley who coordinated and catered for the supper at the end of each of these three nights. Hosting not only raises the profile of our club but it also generates considerable income via match fees and bar sales.

Our teams made it to the Elimination Final on January 30 at Ivanhoe BC, which was a good effort, but just fell short of progressing. Thanks to Tim Brown for his efforts as both selector and side manager.

Visit by Barleycorn Bowling Club

The second and final visit for this Pennant season took place on Thursday evening, February 1. On a pleasant evening, a combination of 48 players from Barleycorn and our club enjoyed a social game of bowls followed by a light supper. The best performing CoHBC team was that Skipped by Carmelo. Thank you to Lesley for providing the supper.

Board Report

Meeting was held on Monday January 15, 2018.

Works undertaken and under consideration:

·  Weed mitigation on the boundary of the top green will be undertaken in the next few weeks. Around boundary, on other side of the fence, screenings will be laid on the north and west boundary.

·  The irrigation system has been partially replaced with the remainder expected to be completed in the near future.

·  A loan is presently being negotiated with the Bendigo Bank. Funds are required for replacement of the bottom Green and other works

·  In the past, the Club held two liquor licences. These have now been consolidated into a single licence.

·  A role description for the bar manager(s) is being developed

·  Quotations are being obtained for the following:

·  Exit and emergency lighting

·  Making our fire equipment compliant and current and maintaining their currency

·  Hard-wired smoke alarms

·  Provision of more efficient lighting over the bottom green.

·  Six 3-metre aluminium seats have been installed at the top green.

·  Parking arrangements with Warringal Hospital have been finalised and will commence on February 1, 2018

·  A draft mentoring Document has been prepared and is near finalisation. Once complete it will be used to induct new bowlers into the club.

·  Inspections by the Greens Committee are being conducted at various clubs to provide a recommendation to the Board on the type of surface to replace the existing bottom green. A recommendation is expected to be made to the Board for consideration at the next Board meeting.

·  Approval for construction of a ramp to the top green has not been forthcoming from Council as yet. It has however been agreed in principle, but no formal approval has been received.

·  There was no support from members for the introduction of proxy voting at the club.

·  Publicity articles have been prepared ready for publishing.

·  A tournament aimed at inexperienced or new bowlers has been organised for commencement in March. Members are encouraged to bring neighbours, friends, workmates to support this initiative.

·  A tournament specifically for Club members is being organised to be held during April 2018. Significant prize money and a lunch will be offered for a very nominal cost. Teams will be randomly made up by organisers.

·  The President’s Wrap which will be held on March 24 will also include a number of items of interest to members such as progress with the green, progress with the ramp, recruitment, mentoring and an opportunity to ask questions and for members to make suggestions.

General Information

Grateful Acknowledgement

Over the last few months, the Club’s website has been gradually revised. It is now a much-improved site with current information and photos, etc. This revision has been done using the expertise of a valued Club Member. David Crisp has used his expertise, free of charge, for the benefit of all club members. The new site looks crisp and current and is much easier to use. Team selections are displayed as soon as selections have been made by selectors and position on the ladder is easily accessed. If you have not looked at the new website I encourage you to do so. David would be grateful for any feedback and your suggestions. There is still some more work to do but we are getting close to the finish. As with any website, the challenge is to keep it up to date with fresh information. David has given an undertaking that he will strive to do this. As club members we are lucky to have someone of the calibre of David who has given us substantial time and wisdom in getting the site to the stage whereby we can proudly refer people to our site. Car Parking

The Board has made an arrangement for 20 Warringal Hospital cars to be parked in our car park along the northern boundary.

This arrangement is for Monday – Friday and came into effect on February 1.

All involved have been issued with a FOB to the gate and will have an ID displayed on their dashboard.

Please be aware of the additional cars in the park. They provide an excellent additional revenue source for our club.

Fire Services

Following an audit of our fire extinguishers it was ascertained that all were out of date and in some cases, not suitable for the purpose.

All extinguishers have now been replaced, together with a fire blanket in the kitchen.

Extinguishers are also located in the main shed (right hand wall) and in the storage room at the top green.

We have an arrangement for all items to be serviced every 6 months.

Please be familiar with the location of these units. All have been installed at the correct height above the floor.

The ant population is visiting the club again. Could we all please be vigilant and ensure everything is clean and free of anything which might attract them.

Bowls-related information

Autumn Social Tournament - sponsored by Total Physiocare, Yarra St Heidelberg

Our Club has organised a sponsored Tuesday night social bowling tournament, starting February 13 and running to March 13. There are monetary prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd each week and at the conclusion of the tournament, there is$100 cash and 2 massage vouchers for the team with the most wins over the 6 weeks. It is open to those players from Division 2 and below. It is to be nominated pairs playing the format 2 4 2, over 2 games each of 7 ends. There is a maximum of 24 teams. The cost is $10 per person per night including a light supper.

Evening Novice Bowling Competition

The club is organising a four-week bowling competition which will be held on four consecutive Wednesday evenings in March 2018. This small competition is aimed at novices or those who have an interest in bowling.

Club Members are encouraged to support this initiative by being pro-active and organising four family members, workmates, neighbours or friends and have a go. This initiative is part of our drive to initiate people to bowling and increase our membership. It is no good lamenting our declining membership or our position on the ladder unless we are all doing our bit to reverse the trend. Each one of us is partly responsible.

The weather should still be fine and a pleasant night can be had by all. Bowls can be provided. No previous experience is expected or required. No fees and no special attire apart from flat soled shoes or runners. Experienced bowlers will be in attendance for tuition but prohibited from participating.

The competition commences on March 7 at 6.30pm and will conclude on March 28, 2018. The games usually go till about 9.00pm. Interested persons should be able to come straight from work, as the club is well located near the Heidelberg station.

You can also come along on any Wednesday evening before March and take advantage of free tuition available. You will receive a warm reception.

Club Championships

Once Midweek and Saturday Pennant season ends, the following Championship matches will be run: Ladies’ Pairs, Mixed Pairs and Men’s Pairs. In an effort to encourage as many participants as possible with a good chance of winning, each of these events will have an experienced bowler paired with a less experienced bowler. Lists of eligible players will appear shortly and if anyone does not want to participate, you must draw a line through name. A schedule of matches will be drawn up from amongst those members willing to participate. Completion of each of these Championship matches will be a priority throughout March and will take precedence over Saturday social bowls until completed.

These matches are an important part of our club’s bowling activities and program. Every pair has a chance to win. The eventual winners do not go on to compete in any other competition.

Please make yourself available to compete in these events. You will enjoy the experience and in doing so help keep our club’s bowls activities vibrant.

Intra Club Tournament

At this time of the year there are many tournaments for which club members can form a team and compete. The tournaments are a great experience since you can compete at various venues against players from other Victorian clubs. Monetary prizes are on offer. The drawback with these events is that they can be seen as a bit daunting to less experienced bowlers plus you often have to travel some distance to compete. In the past, CoHBC has hosted tournaments and will do so again in August this year.

In the meantime, the Match Committee has decided that it would be a great opportunity for our members to experience the tournament environment if we held our own event open only to our own members. As such, this is an early notification to all current Pennant players, including emergencies, and current restricted members that your club will be holding its own tournament on Saturday, April 14. The format will be either triples or teams of four depending on total number of participants. The Match Committee will select teams and team members will decide player positions for the first game. There will be three games of 12 ends throughout the day and team positions must be changed for games two and three. A catered lunch and prize money will complete the tournament environment. There will be an entry cost per person in the $5 to $10 range.

The objective of this event is to encourage participation, have the chance to play in different positions while competing against people you know in familiar surroundings and free of outside pressures and expectations. And you could win some money!

Further details will be forthcoming, so please keep April 14 free and resolve to help make this event a success.

Personal Pars

Our club is the poorer with the recent deaths of Peter Clark and Matt Roddy. These two gentlemen, in their own way, spent countless hours supporting our club despite their individual trials. Each symbolised what membership of a club means. Our condolences to their families and friends.
