FINANCIAL AID
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the form you need to complete to apply for all federal aid (including Pell Grants, Work Study, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, etc.). Many colleges and universities use this form to determine aid at the state and institutional level as well.
- The FAFSA cannot be completed or filed until after January 1, 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year. (You/your parents use your 2015 tax return information to complete the FAFSA.) The fastest way to file is to complete the online version of the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
- Once you receive your student aid report (SAR), which contains your expected family contribution (EFC) - how much money your family is expected to pay towards the cost of college, you need to check it for accuracy and file any corrections as soon as possible.
- When the financial aid administrators at the colleges you select receive your FAFSA, they will verify the information, determine your aid eligibility, and then send you a financial aid award letter. This letter will state the amount of aid for which you are eligible and the types of aid (grants, loans, work-study, etc.) that make up your aid package.
- If you applied to more than one college, you will need to compare the financial aid packages to select the college that best meets your family’s financial needs as well as your educational goals.
- You must accept/decline the financial aid package on a timely basis (return the signed form) to receive your financial aid.
