Young People Counsellor

Based at:Cambridge/Outpost Venues

Responsible to: Centre Director

Main purpose of the job

To deliver a high quality, effective and professional counselling service to Relate Cambridgechildren and young people aged 5-21 years.

To participate proactively in activities and meetings proportionate with the post.

Key Tasks

Administration, personnel and health and safety

Adhere to the code of ethics and practice currently adopted by Relate and British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy in every respect to work to ensure the standards and reputation of Relate and Relate Cambridge are maintained.

Work at times and places reasonably decided by Relate Cambridge and not at unauthorised times or places; and, as far as possible, to accept changes in those arrangements.

Not to counsel without receptionist cover, unless specifically authorised to do so.

Maintain effective and efficient administrative systems to enable Relate Cambridge to effectively monitor the use of the service and feedback from clients within agreed timescales.

Maintain confidential records according to the data protection regulations and centre procedures.

Ensure confidential records are kept in a proper, professional and secure manner i.e. are kept largely factual, updated and filed in secure location after each counselling session.

Deliver records of counselling work within agreed timescales to the Centre Management/Administrator for secure storage and to provide other records and information reasonably requested for Relate Cambridgepurposes of management or research.

Be aware of and adhere to all Relate policies and procedures,including our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy, Safeguarding Adults at Risk Policy & Procedure and Confidentiality Policies, including duly notified changes.

Ensure that all Vulnerable Adult and Child Protection concerns are reported in accordance with Relate policy and procedures and where appropriate, to work with the school Child Protection Officer on safeguarding issues.

Attend and actively participate in individual and counsellor (clinical) supervision and team meetings as arranged by the Supervisor.

Take responsibility for professional development and training as agreed with Supervisor and Centre Director to maintain your professional status and to meet business development needs.

Ensure that you are aware of and adhere to Relate Cambridge Health & Safety Policies and if appropriate school and outpost venues Health and Safety Policies and you are aware of procedures regarding staff and client safety.

Customer Care

Always deal with clients in a friendly and professional manner with a focus on service effectiveness and customer care.

Work collaboratively with all staff and volunteers to ensure the relationship counselling services are delivered in a co-ordinated, professional and efficient manner.

Locations and travel

The post may involve working in a number of locations and will therefore involve some travelling for the proper performance of your duties.

Contribute to discussions about the development of the children and young people

counselling service as required.

Positively and pro-actively undertake other duties as required by the Centre Director or Supervisor, as appropriate to the position.

Person Specification

Essential / Desirable
Education and training
Level 5diploma in counselling / X
Post qualifying specialist training in working with the age group 10-21 years (eg training delivered by Youth Access or CCMH) / X
Willingness to undertake additional training and continuous practice development as required / X
Undertaken Child Protection and Safeguarding training and be aware of Relate’s policies and procedures in this regard / X
Key skills, knowledge and experience
Recognised supervised c&yp counselling practice and/or Certificate of Proficiency / X
Experience of working with a range of counselling theories and methodologies / X
Experience of counselling through a range of delivery methods ie face to face, individual, group, digital, online, etc / X
Experience of working therapeutically with c&yp from a range of backgrounds and needs especially those who may be socially excluded / X
Experience of counselling families, adults, groups or another additional service provided by Relate / X
Ability to maintain accurate and appropriate records and store confidentially / X
Ability to work autonomously and within a team / X
Experience of working within the voluntary sector / X
Experienced in assessing client needs and/ or signposting to appropriate provision / X
