TERM PROJECT

REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE

Basic Requirements:

  • You must obtain a legal copy of the music that you will be performing and perform it as written. The goal is to learn a piece of music on your own, not sing karaoke to a popular radio song. You must turn in a copy of the music with your other forms for me to look at even if your performance takes place elsewhere. I will return it to you.
  • No more than two people may sing one part (e.g. a duet may be sung by 2-4 people, SATB may be sung by up to 8 people). The exception is a solo which must be sung by one person only (trading off phrases or verses does not count as a duet).
  • You must have an accompanist/accompaniment CD/ digital copy of accompaniment unless the piece was meant to be sung a cappella (e.g. barbershop quartet).
  • Set rehearsal goals and plan enough rehearsal time that you can memorize and perform the piece well. This will take much more than three rehearsals, but you only need to turn in your goals for three.
  • Complete Performance Evaluation (see instructions below and form on blog).

Are you performing solo or in an ensemble (group)? ______

What is the name & composer of the song. ______

Rehearsal Information: Choose at least three rehearsal times. Decide what the rehearsal goals are (What do I want to accomplish? For example: memorize words on pg. 3, learn alto part on middle section, correct pitch at the end of phrase on pg. 7, synchronize rhythm during vamp section, entrances or cut off in certain areas, etc… Be specific-you cannot fix a problem that you cannot identify.). Record whether the goal was achieved.

Performance Evaluation: Complete Performance Evaluation Form (see blog)

  • Note at least three specific things that you did very well.
  • Note three specific things that you can improveand explain your plan for improvement.
  • Write a short paragraph about what you learned through the experience and any other thoughts that you may have about the experience. This may be done on the back of the Student Performance Evaluation form.

Note: for rehearsal goals and performance evaluation focus on the musical aspects of the performance such as breathing, phrasing, diction, tone quality, pitch, knowledge and execution of part, correct rhythm, blend, balance, etc… Be very specific about what you are working on and where it is found in the music. (Example: “ I came in strong at the entrance to the second verse. I was having trouble with that earlier”; or, “The chord on page 5 was not in tune because the sopranos, me included, pushed the note sharp.”)
