COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will introduce the Senior Medical student to chronic and acute disability conditions. Students will observe patients in rehabilitation therapy and observe physiatrist in rounds, clinics and brace-prosthetics. Students will also participate in team conferences, lectures, and literature review.
Institutional Objective
Patient Care - Students must demonstrate the ability to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
Course Objective
The student will be able todemonstrate to the faculty the ability to perform an appropriate patient history and write-up a functional-oriented history and physical examination.
Outcome Measure
The faculty will observe the student obtaining an appropriate patienthistory. The student will submit to the faculty awrite-up on a functional-oriented history and physical examination. The write-up must emphasize chronic disability and musculoskeletal impairment, including quality of life functions, social, occupational and familial data. The oral presentation of the findings must:
- Be complete, organized, clean, concise, relevant
- Indicate ability of student to integrate medical facts and data, and to weight the alternatives
- Indicate ability of student to arrive at a plan that is beneficial, appropriate, and cost-effective
Course Objective
The student will demonstrateknowledge of a Rehabilitation Master Problem List.
Outcome Measure
The student will demonstrate to faculty the basic knowledge of a Rehabilitation Master Problem List.

Medical Knowledge-Students must demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and social-behavioral sciences, as well as the application of this knowledge to patient care.
Course Objective
The student will understand basic concepts, terminology, and model of rehabilitation medicine.

The student will demonstrate to the faculty an understanding of the basic concept, terminology, and model of rehabilitation medicine.

The student will recognize clinical problems that can be treated or managed by rehabilitation and be aware of major disabling conditions.
Outcome Measure
The student will demonstrate to faculty recognize clinical problems that can be treated or managed by rehabilitation and be aware of major disabling conditions and treatment options. The student will demonstrate to the faculty member an awareness of major disabling conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, arthritis, low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.
Course Objective
The student will learn principles of prescribing rehabilitative therapy.
Outcome Measurement
The student will demonstrate to the faculty a basic understanding of the principles of prescribing rehabilitative therapy.
Course Objective
The student will understand how to read medical literature in terms of the functional rehabilitation approach.
Outcome Measurement
The student will demonstrate to the faculty an understanding how to read medical literature in terms of the functional rehabilitation approach by presenting a brief presentation at the end of the rotation on a topic to be determined by the course director. The presentation shall include:
- A basic understanding of the concepts of pathophysiology and treatment
- A basic understanding of the concepts of the disease process
- A basic understanding of the rehabilitative requirements.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills - Students must demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, their families, and health professionals.
Course Objective
The student will communicate effectively with physicians, patients, team members, parents of pediatric patients, and others.

The faculty will observe the student effectivelycommunicating.

The student will be directly observed by faculty and residents to determine level of professional responsibility. Professionalism demonstration shall include:
- Maturity in behavior; appropriateness of dress and speech in the hospital and clinic settings
- Acceptance of responsibility for his or her actions
- Approach to patients and their families with compassion and respect
- Cooperation with nurses, house staff and ancillary staff
- Honesty and reliability
- Initiative in dependability in performance with the team
- Prompt attendance for rounds and conferences
- Industriousness and efficiency in completing tasks.

Systems-based Practice - Students will be able to recognize and better understand the role of other health care professionals in the overall care of the patient.
Course Objective
The student will become familiar with the roles of the physiatrist and the interdisciplinary management of the disabled patients.
Outcome Measure
The student will observe members of the interdisciplinary team in action; observe patients in rehabilitation therapy; observe physiatrist in rounds, clinics, and brace-prosthetics; and, observe team conferences.
BASIC SCIENCE OBJECTIVES
Basic Science Objective
The student will demonstrate a basic understanding of the neurophysiology, pathogenesis and treatment of various specific impairments associated with rehabilitative medicine.
Outcome Measures
The student will demonstrate to faculty a basic understanding of the neurophysiology, pathogenesis and treatment of various specific impairments associated with rehabilitative medicine including, but not limited to:
a)Ataxia
b)Flaccid paralyis
c)Mono and polynapticreflexes
d)Spasticity
Basic Science Objective
The student shall demonstrate a basic understanding of the nervous system disorders.
Outcome
The student shall demonstrate to the faculty a basic understanding of the individual functional neurological system, including the extrapyramdial and pyramidal systems.
Basic Science Objective
The student shall demonstrate an understanding of muscle and joint physiology and anatomy.
Outcome Measure
The faculty shall assess the student’s knowledge and ability.
Basic Science Objective
The student shall demonstrate an understanding of the common medications utilized in physical rehabilitative medicine and their possible interactions and implications affecting patient prognosis.
Outcome Measure
The faculty shall assess the student’s knowledge. Specifically, the student shall demonstrate an understanding of the mechanism of action of antispasticity meds,bladder receptors and pharmacology of micturition.
Basic Science Learning Objective
The student shall demonstrate an understanding of the pathophysiology, physiologic adaptation, and pharmacologic management of medical complications of traumatic brain injury.
Outcome Measure
The faculty shall assess the student’s knowledge and ability.
Self-Directed Learning
As a medical student, you are encouraged to useany unstructured time as a time to read about your patients, research questions that arise during the day, prepare for case conferences, and prepare for student-faculty rounds. Preceptors have been specifically asked to look for evidence that you have read articles and books between clinic sessions. Use this time to build your knowledge of medicine and learn from your patients.
ASSESSMENT METHODS
Preceptor Evaluation of criteria below – 100% possible, must receive 85% to receive Honors
The preceptors’ evaluation will be based, but are not limited to, upon the following factors:
- Clinic Attendance and participation in assigned activities
- Conference/ Athletic event attendance
- Demonstration of knowledge and skills outline in course objectives
- Maturity and Professionalism
• Oral Case presentation/patient workup
Each of the above components must be passed in order to successfully complete the course. Remediation is at the discretion of the course director.
