NGSSS: LA.8.1.6.1--The student willuse new vocabulary that is introduced and taught directly.LA.8.1.6.3--The student willuse context clues to determine meanings of unfamiliar words; LA.8.1.6.6: The student willdistinguish denotative and connotative meanings of words;

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.

Advanced Classes’ Standards Addressed During the Week:

NGSSS: LA.8.2.1.1: The student willidentify, analyze, and compare the characteristics of various genres (e.g., poetry, fiction, short story, dramatic literature) as forms chosen by an author to accomplish a purpose;

NGSSSLA.8.2.1.4: The student willidentify and analyze universal themes and symbols across genres and historical periods, and explain their significance;

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.5 Compare and contrast the structure of two or more texts and analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to its meaning and style.

MONDAY:

Regular Classes—

  • Students will be provided with a list and definitions of vocabulary as a pre-reading strategy to begin class novel, “Divergent” by Veronica Roth.
  • We will brainstorm what students know about dystopian societies based on readings of “Hunger Games” books.
  • After viewing and discussing meanings of vocabulary words, students will independently create one sentence for each new term to enhance comprehension
  • Students will then trade sentences with their partners, read, and discuss each other’s interpretation of vocabulary. STUDENTS WILL BE QUIZZED ON TERMS, FRIDAY NOVEMBER 2.
  • Students will also be informed to begin reviewing ALL notes taken so far this year/concepts discussed to prepare for a comprehensive test assessing topics covered to date. COMPREHENSIVE TEST WILL BE ON FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9TH.

Advanced Classes—

  • Today, we will begin a week-long unit in which we view multiple text formats regarding the universal theme of the Supernatural.
  • We will read/listen to 2 poems in which the universal theme of the Supernatural is explored
  • Poem #1 “The Wolf” by Agha Shahid Ali
  • Poem #2 “Boondocks” by Max Scratchmann
  • After the poems, students will work with their partner to differentiate between the connotative and denotative meanings of words/phrases used to depict supernatural themes

TUESDAY & WEDESDAY REGULAR CLASSES:

  • Opening question of the day to review previous day’s reading of class novel.
  • Briefly discuss previous day’s reading of novel to ensure comprehension before continuing book.
  • Read and discuss class novel, “Divergent” by Veronica Roth

TUESDAY ADVANCED CLASSES:

  • Students will listen to the audio version of “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe and answer comprehension questions that follow in the old literature books.

WEDNESDAY ADVANCED CLASSES:

  • Students watch the video of “The Tell-Tale Heart” and take notes on differences/similarities between the video and the text.
  • We will view a short video adaptation of “The Wailing Well” by writer M.R. James (1862-1936).
  • On Friday, students will read the short story “The Wailing Well” by writer M.R. James to compare and contrast film adaptations to the actual literary text.

THURSDAY ALL CLASSES:

  • Early Release
  • Students will be provided with requirements for 2nd 9 weeks Read to Succeed project.
  • We will discuss nonfiction book report requirements.
  • I will give students possible ideas for interesting topics to choose for nonfiction
  • Visit library

FRIDAY REGULAR CLASSES

  • Students will continue reading class novel “Divergent” by Veronica Roth and ( next Tuesday students will take a quiz on vocabulary terms and content covered thus far while reading the class novel.
  • Next Monday, students will be given a study guide for comprehensive test covering material learned to date this school year…students will take test on Friday November 9th.

  • Listen to, read, and view film adaptation of
