Electrical & Electronics Engineer – Power Electronics

(2 year fixed-term contract)

Background

The Wireless Sensor Applied Research Lab (WiSAR) in LYIT is an innovative research centre funded by Enterprise Ireland through the Technology Gateway programme. WiSAR provides solutions to industry for The Internet of Things (IoT) using expertise in wireless, embedded systems and power electronics. WiSAR has an extensive range of industry projects incorporating embedded systems in networks such as Wearables, Industrial Control, Renewable Energy and Communications.

Person Specification

This role is for an electrical or electronic engineer with electronics design or microcontroller firmware development experience. As a key member of a talented team, you will be responsible for researching, designing and developing communications and control systems for a range of new electrical control and power conversion systems.

Applicants should have a degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or in a related discipline. It is essential that the candidate has at least three years of industry design experience, preferably with a focus on power electronics design including analog and digital circuit design.

·  Power semiconductors (IGBTs, MOSFETs) and related passives (DC link capacitors) in high power applications.

·  Gate drive circuits for control and protection of high power semiconductors.

·  Microcontrollers used in control and communications of electronics systems

Essential

·  Primary Degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or equivalent

·  3+ Years of Industry Design Experience

·  Working knowledge of hardware electrical and electronic design

·  Experience with industry standard electronic hardware circuit design and simulation tools

·  Good written and oral skills in English are required

Desirable

·  Power semiconductor mounting and cooling; educational background in power electronics.

·  Creation of customized PC-based laboratory tests with Labview.

·  Knowledge of simulation tools including PSPICE/Matlab/SIMULINK and SABER

·  PCB layout, plane definition, and EMC optimization.

·  Demonstrated ability to provide estimates to a project manager for work undertaken

Key duties and responsibilities:

·  With other members of design team, create the specification of hardware/software for new products

·  Hardware and software design and implementation of new industrial and research development

·  To engage with industry to develop collaborative projects

·  To assume responsibility for completing individual project milestones and maintaining schedule, once tasks are assigned

·  Provision of program information relevant to customer documentation as required

·  Document control and security of firmware within product design

·  To participate in preparation of appropriate project documentation and design reviews to ensure accuracy and adherence to technical requirements, project milestones and costs

·  To report to the Centre Manager and the Principal Investigators as required.

Salary: €38,000 - €50,000 (depending on experience)

Selection Selection will be by interview and in accordance with procedures
