Nameoftheregionalcouncil: Calgary Social Studies Regional Council

Majoractivitiesthattheregionalundertookduringtheyear:

Calgary Regional Council has stabilized somewhat compared to the previous year. A stable executive of president, treasurer and secretary are now in place. The council continues to look for ways to support teachers across the region through numerous after-school activities. To date, the council supported a grade 8-9 sharing session for teachers to share activities that they are doing in their classrooms. With the support of the CRC, each participant was able to depart the session with a memory stick full of practical classroom based activities. The region continues to support high school teachers across the province by creating and maintaining an email list for teachers to share unvetted ideas related to the implementation of the new curriculum at the 10 and 20 level.

The region is excited to host a technology & social studies night for all grade levels on May 7/09. Presenters include Brenda Dyck. May 28 will also see the region host the bi-annual awards recognition of teachers within the region.

Othercomments: The council continues to try and recruit new members to expand the council. Share sessions are well attended, but few express an interest in actively participating in planning council activities. We continue to look for members at all grade levels for advice on how to continue the council’s relevancy during the implementation time period and beyond.
