Region 2 East Zone 4A Band Directors:

The staff and student leadership are proud to host your UIL Concert and Sight-reading contest at BrewerHigh School on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. All of the details regarding the contest site are included below. Please contact me with and questions regarding the site or special needs. Contest information for directors:

  1. Contest Logistics: warm-up will be in the drama room. The monitor will move your percussion section to the stage as soon as the band before you finishes their performance. Please be prepared to leave with the winds no later than 5 minutes prior to your concert performance time. We must keep the contest on schedule. Sight reading will take place in the band hall.
  2. Set-up Chart: please email () or fax (817-367-1241) a set-up chart prior to Friday, April 8. A set-up chart is available on the UIL Region 2 website. Please indicate the total number of chairs and stands needed for each row and accurately draw the location (including percussion music stands). Also, please indicate the placement of the percussion equipment. If you need risers on stage, please indicate those on your set-up chart, and you should provide a set-up crew to move those on and off the stage so our set-up crew can take care of stands and chairs. If your set-up changes the day of the contest, please bring 6 copies for our set-up crew!!
  3. Percussion Equipment: we will provide the following equipment on stage –acoustic piano, 4 Adams timpani, 1 Adams chimes, 2 Musser marimbas, 1 Musser xylophone, 1 set of Yamaha bells, 1 gong/tam-tam, and 1 concert bass drum. We will provide the following equipment in sight reading – 4 timpani, 1 set of bells, and 1 bass drum. You will need to provide any other percussion equipment not listed above, as well as sticks and mallets.
  4. Unloading and Parking: students should be dropped off at the East door of the BrewerFreshmanCenter. A monitor will meet your buses outside and lead you to the warm-up room. The buses must then park on the North side of the building as detailed in the map at the end of this information. Equipment may be unloaded at the drama room double doors.
  5. Restrooms: there are restrooms located at the entry to the FreshmanCenter, but are too small to use as changing rooms. Please arrive in uniform. Also, please remind your band that classes are in session in the FreshmanCenter and to remain quiet inside the building.
  6. Contest Office – Check In/Check Out: The contest office will be located close to the stage. Directors should bring contest scores (3 per selection, numbered, with the school’s name on each) and the UIL Form 1 upon arrival. You must have an accurate Form 1 and/or addendum on file for all contestants entered. Directors should return to the contest office after sight reading and pick up the packet of results and scores. Refreshments will be provided in the contest office for judges, directors, and contest staff only.
  7. An instrument repairman from Johnny Paul’s Music will be available outside the warm-up room if needed.
  8. Warm-up Room: a McAdams metronome and Node chromatic tuner will be available. A student helper will be there to assist you as needed.
  9. Concert Performance: the band will enter from stage right from the warm-up room, and will exit stage right out through the cafeteria. The percussionists and equipment will exit back into the hallway by the Drama Room and then will meet the band at the Band Hall (sight reading room).
  10. Sight Reading: visit the official UIL website for information regarding percussion instrumentation ( we will provide bass drum, bells, timpani. Only contest workers, participating students, and their band directors will be allowed in the sight reading room during preparation and performance of the selection.The band will enter the sight reading room from stage right and exit stage left through the outside band hall doors to the bus parking area.
  11. Other Information:
  12. There are no dressing rooms available; please arrive and depart dressed for performance.
  13. Storage areas will not be provided; use your buses for cases and other items. If the buses must leave during your performance, please contact us no later than Monday, April 11 so we can make special arrangements for your cases. The hallways must be kept clear of cases and extra equipment at all times.
  14. Brewer HS will not provide mallets, sticks, beaters, cymbals, snare drum, or other accessories. Please bring extra extension cords for any electronic equipment as well.
  15. Failure to follow UIL guidelines and procedures outlined in the PML and C&CR will result in action taken by the UIL. Remember that only contest workers, participating students and their directors are permitted in the sight reading room during preparation and performance.
  16. Ratings will be posted in the contest office and in the lobby of the auditorium.
  17. Conduct: please keep your group quiet and supervised by an adult at all times. Please instruct your students in proper concert etiquette if they enter the auditorium to listen to another band. Parents and students should NOT enter or exit the auditorium during a performance.
  18. Parents and other guests: Our building principal has requested that all parents and guests sign in as visitors in the lobby of the auditorium and receive a visitor’s badge. This is for the safety and wellbeing of students and parents visiting our campus.
  19. There will be no eating facilities provided on campus, and no food/drinks are allowed in the drama room, band hall, or auditorium.
  20. There are a wide variety of restaurants located on Clifford Street and on Jacksboro Highway in Lake Worth.
