A FEW FACTS:
· The mental health market of the future: 2,320 refugee families arrived in MN in 2010. Almost 52,000 refugee families have resettled in Minnesota in the past 10 years. Mental health clinicians will see clients who are or have been refugees.
· Clinicians and anyone receiving federal funds are ethically and legally required to provide culturally competent care and services for Limited English Proficiency. Are you a provider for UCare, HealthPartners, Medica or Medical Assistance? If so, these workshops can help you meet these requirements.
LEARN SPECIFIC INFORMATION TO DEVELOP SKILLS NEEDED TO PROVIDE CULTURALLY COMPETENT MENTAL HEALTH CARE TO REFUGEES AND THEIR FAMILIES. Participants in all six of these workshops will receive a “Certificate of Specialized Training in Refugee Mental Health” a Mental Health professionals, ARMHS workers and Community Health Workers (CHWs) are welcome to attend one or all of these trainings.
These Trainings are Sponsored by the Minnesota Council of Churches (MCC) Refugee Services Program. MCC Refugee Services is a local affiliate contracted by the US Department of State to resettle refugees in the Minnesota. MCC Refugee Services has been providing resettlement services in the Twin Cities since 1984 and began a Refugee Mental Health Initiative in 2008 to develop local community capacity to better meet refugee mental health needs.

REFUGEE MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING:
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
*Refugee Mental Health in Minnesota
Friday March 30, 2012 (8:30-4:00); 7 CEUs, $125
This workshop will focus on understanding the “refugee situation.” Topics such as the process of resettlement, the specifics of the triple trauma paradigm for major resettlement groups in Minnesota, the types of idioms of distress and mental health difficulties that refugees to Minnesota are presenting and the barriers to providing culturally competent care to these refugees will be discussed.
*Refugee Mental Health: Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment Friday April 27, 2012, (8:30-4:00); 7 CEUs, $125
Using a case study format, participants will learn about considerations and “bypass” strategies for working with refugees who present with psychological difficulties, including PTSD and anxiety disorders, Major depressive disorders and Psychotic disorders. Three clinicians experienced in refugee mental health will guide these hands-on discussions.
*Working with Interpreters in a Mental Health Setting
Friday May 11, 2012, (8:30-4:00); 7 CEUs, $125
Any clinician or clinic that accepts Medicare or Medicaid ( M.A., PMAP UCare, HealthPartners, Medica, etc) is required by law to have a Limited English Proficiency Plan. The first part of the workshop will focus on completing such a plan (its simple!) and learning about the resources available to clinicians that will cost them no money. Clinicians will learn a protocol for working with interpreters in mental health settings and will have the opportunity to practice with a professional interpreter and a native language speaker.
Working with Survivors of Torture
Friday June 8, 2012 (8:30-12:30); 4 CEUs, $75
Survivors of torture are a subset of the refugee community who need specialized services. Staff from the Center for Victims of Torture will present a workshop addressing this topic.
Psychological Testing with Limited English Proficiency Clients
Friday June 8, 2012, (1:00-5:00); 4 CEUs, $75
This workshop is specifically designed for those licensed psychologists who have competencies in psychological testing. Led by Todd Sigler, an experienced psychologist, participants will discuss the types of tests needed by refugees, appropriate testing instruments and procedures and report writing.
Facilitator: The trainings are organized and facilitated by Sue Johnston, LICSW, Consultant to MCC Refugee Services and former MCC Refugee Mental Health Liaison.
