Reflective Reading Journal & Instructions and Tips for Novel Notes

Reflective Reading Journal

v  You will get 4 points of credit per day of 15 minutes of reading with 1 to 2 PERSONAL REFLECTION sentences.

Ø  Personal reflection sentence starter examples:

o  “I felt like….when….”

o  “Reading this reminded me of …. because….,”

o  “I’m curious about … because …,”

o  “I like (don’t like) the part when … because ….,” etc.

Ø  I DO NOT want a summary of the reading, except to clarify your Personal Reflection. Example: When Goldilocks ate the porridge (summarizing to clarify), it reminded me of eating hot cereal at my Aunt’s house every winter (personal reflection).

Ø  Put name on each sheet NOW and work from the bottom of your packet up to wk 12, ripping off one completed sheet per week.

Points will be deducted at my discretion for:

Ø  Shortened reading times that don’t average at least 15 minutes/day for the week

o  20 minutes one day and 10 minutes the next will NOT result in a loss of points!

Ø  Incomplete or illegible entries ~ print clearly, write clearly, or type!

Ø  Reading Journals turned in the class session after it is due

Ø  Eng 2R Only: 10 points will be deducted (English 2R only must show proof of understanding, attach to reading log, and resubmit) for grammatical or spelling errors that are not addressed by the following week as follows:

§  Grammatical Errors ~

¨  Tutoring or Writing Center

¨  Workbooks

¨  Learning Resource Center Tapes/Books

¨  Computer exercises such as (www.townsendpress.com ~English Essentials)**

§  Spelling Errors, Misused Words (such as homophones, its vs. it’s, etc.), or words you don’t understand and can’t figure out when reading ~

·  Create your own “dictionary” of misspelled words and words with unknown meanings

¨  This will help you remember the next time

Tips for your Novel Notes

Each person has their own way to study; however, these suggestions may help you do better on the open book/open note test later on in the semester. These notes will be checked for points during labs, pretests, etc. (see schedule)! Do NOT fall behind on your reading! 1) Make easy to read notes by writing directly in your book or on separate paper, on flashcards, or sticky notes for each chapter of the book. 2) Make your own title for each chapter. 3) Make notes of key events and characters. 4) Clearly underline or highlight key concepts, interesting lines, etc. (**On the web!)
