Redemptorist Catholic School

Athletic Program Policy Manual

Starting with the 2017-2018 School Year

Redemptorist Catholic Athletic Mission Statement

Welcome to a new school year and a new season of athletics! The mission of the athletic program is to continue teaching students after the school day is complete. In addition to educating the students academically, athletics can also teach the students physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Being a part of a team can be beneficial to anyone, and we hope to include as many students as possible in these benefits. Some of these benefits are:

1. Self-respect, respect for others, and respect for other people’s property.

2. Discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork

3. Physical and emotional fitness

4. Social interaction with peers

5. Enhance spiritual development

6. Experience and learn how to cope with winning and losing

It is expected that all coaches, athletes, and parents remember that they are representing Redemptorist Catholic School and their actions reflect directly upon themselves and the school. Coaches, athletes, and parents must conduct themselves in a Christian manner at all times.

You have to be able to center yourself, to let all of your emotions go. Don’t ever forget that you play with your soul, as well as, your body.

REDEMPTORIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL

ATHLETIC SPORTS POLICY

ALL SPORTS AND ALL GRADE LEVELS

1. Players who miss a practice or game without a valid excuse will not play in the next game. Two (2) unexcused missed practices will result in removal from the team. (Coaches will decide if the excuse is valid or not.)

2. Parents are responsible for picking up and dropping off their child on time for practices and games.

2a. Drop off only athletes for a scheduled practice only 5 minutes before the

scheduled practice time.

2b. Please check the gym, field or track to make sure your child’s coach is present

before dropping off and leaving your child for a practice or game.

3. Each child who begins a season on a team will be assessed a $50.00 fee if they quit before the season has finished causing the team to be unable to complete because of lack of players.

4. Unsportsmanlike conduct by any player will not be tolerated andmay result in removal from the game. Severity could lead to removal from the team.

****If a child is ejected from a game he/she will have a mandatory one game suspension. The infraction will be reviewed by the principal and the Athletic Director. Depending on the severity of the infraction, the child may be given more than a one game suspension or removed from the team.

5. Redemptorist Catholic School depends on admission fees and concessions to pay Referee fees and incidentals. Admission fees are set by the league and not by the school. Not reporting to work at scheduled times (parents) will lead to your child not playing in that day’s game or the next, if that parent is on the last work shift. A parent may switch work times with another parent or get a high school student to work their shift.

6. Students must attend at least 4 class periods in order to play in a game that day.

7. Athletic Eligibility-The 5th through 8th grade students who wish to participate in sports must maintain a 1.66 grade point average without any F’s in any subject including conduct. If a student does not meet this criterion on the report card he/she will be ineligible to participate in any sport. Grades will be evaluated at the next progress report. If the next progress report for mid-nine weeks shows an improvement in grades attaining a 1.66 average, then the student’s grades may be evaluated to reconsider eligibility. Ineligibility includes practices and games unless permission is granted by the administration of the school. The last nine-weeks of the previous school year will be used to determine eligibility for the first nine-week period of the following school year. Fourth grade athletes must not have D’s or F’s on their report cards to participate in sports. The principal, teachers, coaches and athletic director will review all grades in regard to eligibility. Only the principal will make exceptions to this eligibility criterion and only in cases where the student has extenuating circumstances. The 4th grade students will be allowed to participate in sports if, at the beginning of practice time and throughout practices and games, they have A’s, B’s and C’s in all subjects including conduct. If at any time the teacher, parent or principal feels a student is not deserving of this privilege to participate in the sport, the student will be dismissed from the team.

8. Parents-Do not shout instructions to your child. The coaches have instructed the team of their game plan and by shouting instructions to your child you only confuse them.

9. Be courteous to the referees. It is a hard job. Allow coaches to handle all situations.

10. School rules apply not only to the school day, but also to field trips, sporting events, and extracurricular activities. Redemptorist Catholic School students should remember that they represent the school at all times and they must never bring discredit to their school. Redemptorist Catholic students should strive to live by the school philosophy at all times. (See Parent-Student Handbook).

11. If you or your child have any questions or concerns about any team situation or sport, please contact

1. The Coach

2. The Athletic Director

3. The Principal

**Playing sports is a privilege, not a right. All athletes should receive the same opportunity to participate in each sport. Although playing time may not be distributed equally, coaches should make every effort to give each player equal attention and instruction and a fair amount of playing time. If should also be understood that the competition is more competitive and focused on winning in older leagues, where younger leagues focus more on teaching the basics of the sports. Athletes must consider the coaching advice given to them and make an effort to follow that advice.

12. NO SUNDAY EVENTS-This includes practices, games and tournaments, and meets.

13. Only a parent is authorized to arrange travel to and from athletic events for their child. Redemptorist Catholic does not authorize any coach or sponsor (cheerleading) to transport students. It is strictly forbidden.

14. Cheerleader: The cheerleading squad at Redemptorist Catholic consists of students from grades 5 through 8. The constitution provides all the information regarding this squad. A teacher or parent sponsor is in charge of the squad. The constitution consists of:

5th-8th Grade Girls-Everyone can be a cheerleader. All must keep GPA requirements.

POLICIES FOR COACHES

Head Coaches of each team will be decided on by the Administration.

Coaching Responsibilities:

1. The coach is responsible for the supervision of student athletes during practices and games. Coaches must stay with students after practices and games until all students have been picked up.

2. If students use the locker rooms for practices or games, coaches should monitor locker room activity.

3. Coaches should arrive before the scheduled time of a practice or game. Once athletes on your team arrive, they become your responsibility.

4. If your team is scheduled to have the last practice for the day, it is your responsibility to lock the gym and gate. If you do not have keys and think you may need a set, please contact the Athletic Director or the Principal.

Coaching conduct and etiquette:

1. All coaches must demand the best from each athelete.

2. Dressing appropriately for all athletic events is required.

3. School policies found in the Parent-Student Handbook and the Athletic Handbook should be enforced.

4. All athletes should be treated fairly and equally.

5. Coaches should keep in mind that they are a role model to all kids and act in an appropriate manner.

6. Coaches must remember that they are representing the school.

7. Coaches may not become physical with any athlete.

8. Coaches may not address any athlete in a derogatory manner.

9. No profanity or vulgar language should be used.

10. Tobacco and alcohol products are forbidden while in the presence of students/athletes.

**All coaches and volunteers must be Safe Environment Certified

The Administration reserves the right to remove any coach or volunteer from their position if their words or actions are seen as inappropriate.

Policies for Parents

1. While most people see winning as the purpose of sports, parents must remember that it is only a game and students participate to learn and have fun.

2. Parents should make their child’s coach(es) aware of any medical issues their child may have that may affect the safety of their child and other children.

3. Sportsmanlike conduct should be demonstrated by parents in regard to officials, coaches, players, and other parents.

4. Parents should encourage their child and their teammates to follow the rules of the game and not resort to hostility or violence.

5. It is important to remember that athletes make mistakes while in the middle of the game especially in high pressure situations. A child should never be ridiculed or yelled at for making or losing a game.

6. Each team has a coach. It is understandable that everyone may not agree with the decisions made by the coach but the athletes and the coaches have a game plan that is discussed and followed. If you do not agree with something that was done, please do not try to “coach” from the stands. Any disagreements, including but not limited to game plan and playing time, may be discussed in private by following the chain of command.

7. A concession schedule will be made prior to each season. If you are unable to work your scheduled time you are responsible for finding a replacement. The first team playing is responsible for setting up the food items in the concession. There will be a new list of closing procedures for closing the concession. Whichever group is the last one to work in the concession stand, they are

responsible for cleaning the concession stand and getting it ready for the next event. The last team playing is responsible for cleaning the bleachers and making sure all trash is disposed of.
