Children’s Medical Equipment Recycling and Loan Service (CMERLS)

The Children’s Medical Equipment Recycling and Loan Service (CMERLS)

provides recycled, durable specialized medical and

therapeuticequipment to children in B.C.

Eligibility

Children must be registered with the Ministry of Children and

Family Development At-Home Program or must be in the care of the Ministry.

CMERLS also provides loans and donations of medical and therapeutic equipment to:

  • Children in families with limited financial resources
  • Not-for-profit organizations
  • Community centres and schools with inadequate resources to fund special needs equipment

CMERLS provides a broad range of equipment including:

  • Manual and electric wheelchairs
  • Walkers
  • Standers
  • Bathing aids
  • Toileting aids
  • Positioning aids
  • Hospital beds
  • Pressure relief mattresses and cushions
  • Lifts
  • Biomedical equipment

Loan period

In most cases, equipment is loaned out for as long as the person needs it. Program staff periodically check on the condition of the equipment and arrange for repairs to be done as necessary.

Application process

The following Health Professionals may request equipment from CMERLS using our application form:

  • Dieticians (IV poles and feeding equipment only)
  • Nurse Practitioners (Biomedical equipment only)
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physical Therapists
  • Physicians and Surgeons
  • Registered Nurses

Please call us at 604-709-6699 to alert us to any URGENT REQUESTS.

We follow up non urgent requests within 4 working days. If you have not been contacted within that time period, please call to ensure we received your request.

When a care team is working to acquire equipment for a child please identify which health professional is the primary contact.
