Recruitment of Graduate Technicians to support analytical chemistry resource and a cell culture and molecular biology resource / microbial culture collection.

Position’s description:

The CBQF (Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina – Centre of Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry) is a Research Centre formed in 1992 within the Faculty of Biotechnology of the Catholic University of Portugal (ESB). The CBQF, invites applications for two experienced graduate technicians to assist in the operation and management of two key resources of the research centre, under the financing provided by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - Foundation for Science and Technology (Reference - UID / Multi / 50016/2013). The work will be developed in Porto, with an expected start in September 2015. The appointment is initially based on an annual contract and can be extended until 31-12-2017, conditional on a positive performance review.

Qualifications and requirements:

All candidates will be expected to hold at least an undergraduate degree in a relevant scientific discipline and be able to demonstrate experience of operating the type of research and support equipment relevant to the specific profile.

Profile 1. Experienced Graduate technician to be instrument operator and co-managers of the GC/LC/MS platform.

Applications are invited from graduates in chemistry, biochemistry and other academic profiles with experience in operating GC/LC/MS instruments. Candidates with experience of targeted and non-targeted approaches – including metabolomics will be particularly welcome. A Licentiate, (BSc) degree is a minimum requirement and hands-on experience is essential. Salary and conditions will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Profile 2. Experienced Graduate technician to be operator and responsible for cell culture and molecular biology laboratory and microbial culture collection curator.

Applications are invited from graduates in microbiology, biology and other academic profiles with experience in cultivating and maintaining animal and human cell lines and operating the key instruments and other equipment that this requires. Experience with microbial culture collections would also be an advantage although it is not essential. A Licentiate degree is a minimum requirement and hands-on experience is essential. Salary and conditions will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Place of work: The work will be developed in CBQF - Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina da Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, reporting to the General Manager, Dr Gonçalo Almeida.

Selection methods: The selection of candidates will be conducted initially by analysis of the documents presented (below). The evaluation will attribute 40% of total to the merit of the CV presented and 60% to how adequately the candidate scientific profile meets the specific requirements of the position. The final decision may involve, where necessary, interviewing up to three of the best-positioned candidates.

Evaluation Committee

The evaluation committee will be headed by Dr. Tim Hogg (chairman) of The CBQF (Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina – Centre of Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry) and by an internal panel.

Form of disclosure/notification of results:

The final evaluation results will be announced as an ordered list candidates according the rank obtained in the evaluation. This will be posted in a visible and public place in Human Resources Department of the Portuguese Catholic University, and the selected and other candidates notified by e-mail.
