Recreation Director Job Description

Position Summary

Plan, organize, direct and implement recreational programs designed to meet the recreational and cultural interests of the residents of Scituate. The Recreation Directorreports to the Town Council which appoints an Advisory Committee to the Director.

Responsibilities

  1. Determine, recruit, train and manage qualified personnel necessary for the organizing, scheduling, and execution of events.
  1. Establish goals, determine and manage resources necessary to meet goals and maintain an ongoing inventory of resources.
  1. Develop for Town Council approval by September 30tha projected events program for the upcoming year including events specifics, detailed expenses, income, staffing, and level of resident participation. The projected program does not include field and physical plant maintenance.
  1. To record contemporaneously a record of completed events specifying revenue, expenditures and program participation and submit quarterly reports to the Town Council.
  1. Maintain ongoing timely communication with community stakeholders including projected program participants, the Town Council and all Town Departments as appropriate to the event or circumstance.
  1. Seek and administer grants and funding from both private and public sources.
  1. Confer and coordinate with community groups and Town departments in planning for the long term recreational needs of residents.
  1. Coordinate and promote volunteerism within the program.
  1. To perform other duties as may be requested by the Town Council.

10. To personally supervise/execute events as may be necessary.

Desired Qualifications

  1. An Associate’s Degree in recreation, sports and leisure, physical education or related field plus two years of increasingly responsible supervisory experience working with various age groups with emphasis upon youth or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be substituted for any of the aforementioned specific qualifications.
  1. Physically and mentally capable of executing all position responsibilities.
  1. Strong interpersonal communication skills
  2. Working knowledge of hardware and software related to execution of responsibilities.
  3. Ability to acquire and maintain working knowledge of regulations and legal requirements of recreational program functions including confidentiality.
  4. Working knowledge of the recreation programming principles, including knowledge of arts, crafts, aquatics, various sports and cultural activities associated with a public recreation program, municipal recreation administration, parks usage and maintenance scheduling
  5. Knowledge of social trends and indicators and their impact on recreation program policy
