Recently Qualified Teachers - Leaders of Tomorrow Programme2015- 2016

Introduction

Why do significant numbers of new teachers leave the profession in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of teaching? Evidence suggests that we shouldn’t leave early identification of potential future leaders to chance and that this nurturing of talent needs to be part of a regional strategic talent management plan. The “Leaders of Tomorrow” programme is designed for recently qualified teachers (RQTs) with leadership potential and we are looking for Teaching School Alliances in the BBCL area to nominate 50 RQT’s from the patch.

The Programme

There will be an initial one day conference for 150 RQT’s facilitated and delivered by teaching schools in January 2016 followed by two BBCL patch based development days. In addition to the three face to face days as part of the Programme participants will be asked to engage in a one day school visit between the patch days to gain exposure and learning from observing alternative models of leadership in another school setting.

The Participants

  • Must be an RQT in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of teaching
  • Ideally must either be a teacher in a recognised shortage area (i.e. maths or an aspirant female leader in secondary) or from a school in one of the identified priority areas (e.g. areas where it is difficult to recruit middle and senior leaders, such as rural and coastal areas)
  • Must have an aspiration to move to a next stage promotion or to apply for a recognised middle leadership programme within 12-18 months of completing the programme
  • Must have a willingness to be contacted so that long term impact can be measured

The Benefits

Below are quotes from the participants of the 2014-15 Leaders of Tomorrow Programme.

“I now know what my next steps are to progress to a leadership position. I will start taking a focus and area to develop in school and look at NPQ courses”

“I learned about developing my own emotional intelligence to help build the best possible relationships with staff ensuring constructive, collaborative working environment.”

The programme gave me an insight into working collaboratively with staff both in my school and another school”

Dates of the Face to Face Sessions

20thJanuary 2016 at Wigan Athletic Stadium
10th February 2016 – Venue to be confirmed
29th April 2016 – Venue to be confirmed

Joining the Programme

We are asking each Teaching School in the BBCL area to nominate 2 RQTs from their partnership. There may be additional places available (this happened last year as some Teaching Schools did not fill their places) so please feel free to nominate a third who will then be on the reserve list.

To nominate an RQT please complete the attached information and email to Bea Price at no later than 20th November 2015.
