The 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council and of the opening of the Year of Faith and of the Synod of Bishops on the theme of the New Evangelization contribute to reaffirming the Church’s desire to engage with greater courage and zeal in the mission to bring the Gospel to the very ends of the Earth,” wrote Pope Benedict XVI.

When Pope Benedict XVI wrote Porta Fidei, his letter of Introduction to the Year of Faith, which began on the 11th October 2012 and ends on 24th November 2013, he had in mind this starting date because it marks the twentieth anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and is also the 50th anniversary of the opening of the second Vatican Council. Copies of a booklet called Doorway to Faith, and acorresponding calendarare available in both churches.
