1: Discuss why Reasonable Adjustments may become more common e.g. The influx of immigrants with limited English language skills, and then select through consensus the 3 most probable causes:

Possible Reasons:Increase in immigrants with poor English Language skills

People being moved from Disability Benefit to Work

Increased and improved diagnosis of Special Needs

Increase in obesity in population

More positive attitude to drug and alcohol addiction and criminal records

Increase in Care in the Community as opposed to hospitalisation

This list is not exhaustive, other reasons will probably be discussed

2: Discuss what Reasonable Adjustment may need to be put in place for the following needs:

1:Learner with Severe hearing loss:Use of a qualified 'signer' depending on severity, giving assessment instructions or question in written rather than oral form, guidance to assessor to ensure that candidate can lip read, e.g. talk slowly, always talk face to face and enunciate clearly with mouth shape.

2: Learner with drug dependency that is being treated by Methadone: Increase time for assessments and length of course, give clear written information about time and date of assessments and check that the candidate does not have other appointments e.g. doctor, methadone clinic, probation officer.

3:Learner with Tourette’s Syndrome: Use of a prompter to ensure candidate stays on task, use of a practical assistant to work with candidate, accept any tic, swearing, loud noises as normal and ignore

3: What must a Centre do if they wish to instigate special assessment arrangements for a learner?

1:Ensure that Reasonable Adjustments do not affect the reliability or validity of the assessment

2:Contact SQA if the Reasonable Adjustment changes the published assessment requirements

3:All Reasonable Adjustments must be recorded

Also, Centres should ensure at recruitment that candidates have both the physical, sensory and mental capacity to complete the qualification and that if support or arrangements are likely to be required and can be implemented with no damage to the integrity and validity of the qualification, the learner is aware of these.
