Reality lab for the transition to renewable energy sources

The Energy Campus is both a beacon and an example

The transition to renewable energy sources in the form of an actual building and offering cutting edge, innovative training opportunities and packaged in an impressive architecture: that’s the Energy Campus, Stiebel Eltron’s new training and communication centre at the company headquarters in Holzminden. “On the one hand this building demonstrates that the house of the future can be successfully realised with the energy transition, that it is a reality and is built today”, says Rudolf Sonnemann, Chairman of the Board of Management of the German building services and heating technology company. This is also expressed in the platinum certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) which the company is aspiring to – the highest rating awarded by the German Sustainable Building Council. “And in the new building we also offer our specialist partners theoretical and practical training opportunities, the likes of which can only be found here in Holzminden – innovative solutions for simulating extreme environmental conditions for example, to enable the products that can be experienced to be thoroughly scrutinized and ultimately to be better understood.”

The new building was erected right on Dr.-Stiebel-Straße and gives the company a new public face. An inviting communications centre was created with meeting and conference rooms that can be used flexibly by the company’s national and international guests, external visitors, companies or associations. In the practice rooms those interested can gather hands-on experience in the theme areas “heat pump systems”, “ventilation systems”, “hot water” and “installation centre”. All products are linked with outstanding presentation systems. Large visualisations show the different parameters for each solution, the interaction of different components can be observed and analysed in real time.

The large restaurant for employees and guests rounds off the premises. In addition, the Energy Campus offers plenty of space for interaction and communication. This is visualised, for example, with the large glazed areas of the façade. Here, there is an open exchange of knowledge and continuous transfer of know-how.

The Stiebel-Eltron heat pump technology is a key element of the heating and cooling supply for the Energy Campus. The groundwater serves as an environmental energy source and its usage is symbolised with a water basin in front of the building. The integrated concept is supplemented by an optimised building shell and the photovoltaic system integrated in the façade and roof with a total power output of around 120 kWp. The renewably generated electricity is used for both the heat pump system and also for the operation of and equipment in the Energy Campus.

The energy-plus building is both a generating station and an accumulator for renewable energy. The large thermal buffer cylinder and hot water cylinder enable delayed use of the energy generated. The intelligent energy management, which also includes an electric mobility charging station in front of the building with charging points for electric cars and e-bikes, perfectly implements the idea of networked structures – “a true reality lab for the transition to renewable energy sources”, says Karlheinz Reitze, Director of Sales and Marketing. “The Energy Campus shows that the house of the future – with its own electricity production and environmentally friendly and sustainable building services based on heat pumps as key elements – works and can be economically realised and operated.”

The energy needed is generated from the three energy sources groundwater, air and sun and used in the building for heating the rooms, cooling, ventilation and domestic hot water. The heat pumps that are used in training programmes are also an integral part of the building’s energy concept. The energy generated here is largely used in the Campus.

Reitze is convinced that “In future the Energy Campus will be a supra-regional, national and international magnet for all market partners – such as architects, planners, energy consultants, wholesalers and tradesmen – when it comes to finding intelligent solutions to the challenges of the future”.
