A meeting of the Real Estate Advisory Committee was held on March 29, 2006, at Marie Callender’s Restaurant in Hemet, CA. minutes of that meeting following:

  1. Welcome and Introductions

Laurie McLaughlin called the meeting to order at approximately 11:38 am. The committee members introduced themselves. Ms. McLaughlin discussed the role of the Real Estate Advisory Committee and reviewed apamphlet that details the purpose of advisory committees.

Mr. Bil Bergin presented information on current course offers and asked the committee for feedback on how MSJC can better the program.

  • Enrollment Numbers and Course Offerings

The PowerPoint presentation showed the program’s growth in enrollment and course offerings over the last 6 semesters; growth potential is currently limited by the number of instructors and availability of classrooms.

Mr. Bergin and Ms. McLaughlin discussed the requirements to be a real estate instructor, including: opportunities, program development, curriculum and explanation of Student Learning Outcomes, Internships. Laurie McLaughlin discussed general need for the students to be involved in occupational internships

  • Statistics for students
  • Working on a model for student follow up

  • Students who take his RE 140 Principles class
  • 60%take exam of which 90+% pass on the first attempt
  • 40% elect not to take exam
  • Majority of student enrolled in his RE 141 Practice class have their license and are fulfilling their initial 18 month requirements
  • Enhance specific topics discussed in class by utilization of guest speakers
  • Need for practical application– Paul Guess
    In relation to our current RE 141 Practice is in line with the need for practical application (i.e. business planning, how to generate business) but could be enhanced by adding an objective to the current course outline of record for ‘role-playing’.

Solution is to go out in the field to Real Estate companies in the Temecula area to donate board /conference rooms to teach our classes in.

  1. Market Outlook for Real Estate

Participants agreed that the market for real estate is slowing; listings not selling as quickly; staying open on the market for 30+ days - cyclical moderate downturn. However, members reiterated that there still exists much opportunity in the field. Escrow agents are in much demand.
