ReadingReceipts:whatdidyoubuyandhowmuchwasit?

TargetAudience:SeniorHighSchoolOralCommunicationClass

Objective:StudentswilllearnhowtoreadareceiptinEnglishandlearnthevocabularyassociatedwithpurchasinggoodsandservices(i.e.salestax,discounts,total,etc).Afterthislesson,studentsshouldbeabletoreadandunderstandatypicalreceiptandwriteareceiptforacustomerifneeded.

Materials:Twoworksheets.Thefirstworksheetisalargecopyofabasicreceiptwithpartslabeled.Theworksheet’sbacksideisablankcopyofareceiptthatstudentswillfillinwhilelisteningtotheALT.Anotherworksheethasclothingitemswithpricesforreviewand4blankreceiptsonthebacksideforstudentlisteningandwritingpractice.

Procedure:

  1. WarmUp[5minutes]

Quicklyreviewhowmuchisandhowmucharegrammar.

  1. Howmuchis/howmucharegame[10minutes]

Studentsgetwithapartnerandusingtheworksheetwithpicturesofclothingandprices,askeachotherhowmucheachitemisusing(isandare)whereneeded.

  1. ALTexplanationofatypicalreceipt[15minutes]

Passingouttheworksheet,theALTthenwalksthroughthemodelreceiptwiththestudents,pointingoutthedifferentpartsofthereceipt:store’sname,address,itemspurchased,cost,salestax,amountbeforetax,total,discount,cash,change,andwhateachwordmeans.TheALTshoulddrawtheexamplereceiptontheblackboardsostudentscanclearlyseeeachpartofthereceiptandhowthetotalisderived.StudentsthenturntheworksheetoverandlistentotheALTandJTEdialoguetopracticefillingouttheblankreceipt.TheywillrecordwheretheALTwent,whattheybought,howmuchitwas,didtheygetadiscount,howmuchwastax,andthetotal,howtheypaid,andhowmuchchangewasgivenback.

Usingasecondworksheet,thestudentslistentotheALTandfillintheblankreceipts,usingtheexampleworksheetasaguideline.TheALTwillthencallonstudentsandaskquestions:wheredidtheygo,whattheybought,howmuchchangewasgivenback,etc.
