Reading Inventory and Log UPDATED

Language Arts 8

Mr. Coia

E1a: The student reads at least twenty-five books or book equivalents each year. The quality and complexity of materials to be read is based on the lexile level for grade eight (900L-1150L). The materials should include traditional and contemporary literature (both fiction and nonfiction) as well as magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and online material. Such reading should represent a diverse collection of material from at least three different literary forms and from at least five different writers.

In order to meet this requirement, you’ll need to work on reading outside of class time and class materials. After reading a book, you’ll complete the following information:

  • Book title and Author(Remember to italicize the title and include author’s full name)
  • Lexile level: Go to to find the level of your chosen book.If it is not located there, type in Lexile not found.
  • Date completed: You should have at least the month and the year
  • Evidence: Write your choice of evidences that you are using to show that you read it.

Evidence:

After reading, you can do one of the following to show that you read this book. Please use a variety of evidences throughout the year.

  • Reading Counts! Quiz: Take on your own time if your book has one. This is certainly the easiest and quickest way to get to reading again. Include the score that you earned. You must have at least a 70% for it to count.
  • A micro-writing assignment: Use the format of one of our short writing assignments to complete one for this book. This could include a Where I’m From poem, chapter titles, a concrete poem, a list of CD songs, I Am What I Am Not poem, etc. As we complete more in class, you’ll see the possibilities. Check the board in class for a complete list.
  • Book review: Type a 150-word book review that analyzes the plot, characters, or theme of your book. Do not use “I” or “me” in your writing.
  • Forum Entry: Post an entry on the forum on mrcoia.com that compares your book with something that we’ve read in class. This will be about 150 words.
  • Take My Word for It:Here’s your freebie. You do nothing more than write in this phrase in the evidence box after completing your book. You can use this up to ten (10) times. That’s quite a bit, don’t you think?

All of your writing will go in your writing portfolio in class. This log will remain in your folder. There will be periodic checks on your progress.
