  1. Description

Reading Essentials is an elective course that is either 1 credit or a .5 credit. Students will improve reading skills through vocabulary study and basic reading comprehension study.

  1. Organization

Students develop strategies for reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition through instruction and activities. Instruction in reading strategies allows students to see how to identify and apply strategies while reading. In addition, students recognize the value of using comprehension strategies while reading. Widely practiced comprehension strategies include activating prior knowledge, monitoring and repairing comprehension throughout reading, synthesizing information, making inferences, asking questions, setting a purpose for reading, making predictions, using context to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, using mental imagery, creating summaries, and using

graphic organizers and mnemonic devices.
