Course Description

Read 180 is an individualized research-based reading intervention program with the core belief that all students can achieve. Read 180 implements “on-going data-driven focused instruction” (Hill & Crevola, 1999). It is personalized. It precisely targets areas that students need to improve. It provides a multi-sensory approach to learning.

The Read 180 program focuses on strengthening students’ reading, writing, language conventions, listening and speaking skills. In order to address these four areas, the Read 180 instructional model is divided up into four different parts:

I. Whole Group

  • Teacher models reading and writing strategies.
  • The rest of the instructional model consists of three 20 minute rotations.

II. Read 180 Computer Software

  • Focused on four skills: vocabulary, spelling, reading fluency, and comprehension.
  • The instructional computer software differentiates for each student based on their instructional needs.

III. Independent reading

  • Students select books that match their interests and instructional reading level.
  • Students are held accountable for their reading through: written responses to the book (quick writes), journal entries, teacher interview, book talks, and the reading counts quiz on the computer.

IV. Small group

  • Practice and implement skills discussed in whole group
  • Opportunity to review and re-teach skills

Entering and Exiting Read 180

Upon entering the Read 180 program, students are given the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI). This tool helps determine students’ instructional reading level. In turn, this assures that students are reading books in their appropriate reading range. The SRI is administered three times a year to chart growth. We use the SRI scores at the end of the year, along with other data, to determine if the student is ready to exit the class.

The homework should not take more than twenty minutes. The intent is to reinforce essential skills so students “over learn” the content and store it in their long-term memory.
