Midterm Portfolio: Annotated Text Assignment Commentary

This assignment, again, is another projection of the complexity that makes up a person, and consequently, a character in a story. What I liked most about this assignment was the reading into the time period and determining its effects on the characters and their consequent actions, mostly that of the difficulties between the narrator and her husband as man and woman, husband and wife, or doctor and patient during the Victorian era. I felt that understanding the setting was most important to understanding the people in the sense that environment creates a person.

On the structural side, I felt that the assignment was interesting merely because I’ve never done something like it before, especially not on the internet. I knew it was possible to edit real Wikipedia pages, but I never really knew how it was done and…well, now I know. I also thought it was really cool how we could add videos to the text. That makes things so much more interesting as I often find the touchstone of an image for a reading makes things more interesting.

And to be honest, I just liked the idea that we could analyze line by line. It’s an interesting concept that I think is relevant in that some authors pack a whole lotta meaning into small lines or areas. It’s interesting to look at each line from different viewpoints such as feminist, medical, historical, etc.
