RE:SP 0702-125 TH 14 (Bridge 91387) Lining Constructability Review

Bridge 91387 is a 13’x12’ (approx. height x width) CMP culvert through TH 14 and Raintree Road in Mankato, MN. Recent loss of material around this culvert has caused voids to open up in the TH 14 lanes and shoulder. Due to traffic volume concerns and the depth of embankment above this culvert, the culvert will be rehabilitated using trenchless technologies. The method of rehabilitation currently planned is to line the existing culvert with an 108” reinforced concrete pipe with CLSM grouting in the annular spaces. This lining work will be combined with an adjacent TH 14 roadway mill and overlay project.

To facilitate placement of the 108” liner inside the existing CMP, MnDOT has incorporated a temporary construct access road into the roadway plans. This temporary access road was located to allow liner sections to be delivered to a tangent section of existing culvert and not affect the TH 14/TH 22 ramps. This will also allow the Contractor to stage equipment and materials at the inlet end of the culvert. MnDOT is also in the process of securing a temporary easement on the outlet end of the culvert to allow for access & additional equipment placement, if needed, by the contractor’s means and methods.

A project index map, bridge 91387 plan, profile, and detail sheets, the adjacent grading plans, and special provisions will be available for review in advance of meetings by December 6, 2017, at:

ftp://ftp2.dot.state.mn.us/pub/outbound/district7/sp0702-125/20171031_cnstreview/

MnDOT is looking for input with regards to:

  • Construction challenges and contractor identified risk(s) of the proposed project.
  • What is the expected construction time frame to complete all work associated with culvert lining work?
  • Is there another construction method to rehab a culvert of this size using trenchless technology?

MnDOT requests one-on-one meetings with potential culvert construction and/or grouting contractors to review proposed concepts and provide feedback. The meetings may be in person or done by a phone conference (per contractor’s request).

MnDOT cannot compensate contractors for the one-on-meetings, or accommodations to and from the meeting. Contractors will not be disqualified from submitting bids for construction if they attend. All minutes and summary of discussion will be posted on the FTP project website after the meetings (names and company titles will not be available for viewing).

December 6, 2017,has been selected as the Department’s desired time period for constructability reviews. Please contact Glen Coudron, Project Manager, at 507-304-6165 or to schedule a meeting. Meetings will be held at the Department’s Mankato office.
