RE: Information for ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee)

Dear Parents,

Welcome to another wonderful start of the school year! On behalf of Valencia High School, we would like to welcome our new parents and students. We hope that you and your student will have a successful four years at Valencia and our goal is to help you navigate through the high school process as you begin to already prepare for your students’ post-secondary goals. One way to become more involved is through parent programs such as School Site Council, PTSA, ELAC, and parent workshops. We invite you to partake in our parent English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), which will offer 4-5 parents workshops and meetings this year!

Various topics related to our English Language Learner (ELL) program at Valencia are discussed, including information about our English Learner program, support services, graduation requirements, college and university preparation, community resources, and about the different state required tests (ex. CELDT, CAHSEE). We also offer guidance to parents with regard to their child’s academics, grades, and useful information such as how to navigate through the parent portal (ABI), and with up to date information regarding our school.

Mrs. Douglas, counselor at Valencia High is the school contact for our ELAC. Our meetings are held at Valencia High, are in Spanish, and our ELAC parent President/and or other parent leaders and staff members accompany us at each meeting to offer guidance and support. Please review our list of ELAC dates for the 2016-17 school year and join us! As a parent of an ELL student, it is important to participate in ELAC, among other school functions and to understand the programs and support services that are offered at your school. We also welcome past ELAC members and parents of students who have recently reclassified from the ELL program! Our committee usually consists of about 25 members throughout the school year.

We wish the best for your student and want to be able to offer you the most up to date information pertaining to our school programs and to give parents information about our English Learner program. Your participation in ELAC is much appreciated and as a parent in the committee, you have a voice, a collaborative voice to help enable positive change. We also invite your student to partake in the meetings in which they can earn community service time.

We encourage you to make time and be a part of our ELAC at Valencia High!

Sincerely,

ELAC Committee 2016
