From: Phil Dunn, CIO

Dear GPS Community,

The DLE Summer Release Program Overview and Qualifications

We are excited to inform you that Greenwich Public Schools (GPS) will be supporting the summer learning of students who are in grades 3-11 in SY2015-16. Please note the following summer provisions:

  • Seniors and departing families MUST return devices: Graduating high school students will be asked to return their devicesprior to, and as a requirement for graduation ceremony participation. Please note that students cannot buy their device due to Town of Greenwich rules.
  • DLE Summer Opt In for Grades 3-8: Students in Grades 3 -8, and any families leaving Greenwich Public Schools are required to return their device by Friday, June 10 (this date may vary by school based on principal/LMS decision). HOWEVER, families with students currently in grades 3-8 who intend to continue in GPS may request that their child borrow their educational device to support their summer learning. These families must complete a DLE Summer Opt In Form, available at this link ( or before Sunday, May 15for each child.
  • DLE Summer Opt In for Grades 9-11: Students in Grades 9-11 will be allowed to take their devices home as long as their parent/guardian has completed an updated Liability Form at the following link () by June 1 for each child.

Per current student and staff exit procedures, each school’s Administrative Assistant (AA) is responsible for identifying the families who are leaving Greenwich Public Schools, or staff who are retiring, resigning or moving to a different school, creating a list of these individuals, and notifying these individuals that they must return their devices to the Library Media Center subject to the DLE Device Return Procedure (see below) prior to leaving. Please note that if a student intends to return to their home school at the closing of this year, then borrows a device, but over the summer decides to attend another school in the District, then they should simply return their device at their new school, and that building’s Media Technical Assistant (MTA) will reconcile the inventory.

All families must complete a new online DLE Device Liability Form by August 26 for each borrowed device to cover usage of the device for SY2016-17 using this link - Please note that you are encouraged to resolve any need for replacement peripherals (cases, keyboards, and chargers) BEFORE June 10, as the District will not be able to provide replacement peripherals during the summer.

Families will be completely responsible for their borrowed device and peripherals over the summer. If complete responsibility is not desired, families are strongly cautioned to not participate in this voluntary program.

Seamless Summer Learning Through DLE

The DLE Digital Toolbox will be available for students’ use during the summer. We recommend preventing summer learning loss in reading and math by using the device to practice math and reading from a collection of LMS-curated eBooks. We recommend that students use IXL a minimum of 30 minutes per week, and to read for their own enjoyment for 30+ minutes per day, using the access provided to our eBook collections. The “DLE Seamless Summer Program” memo to parents provides a brief description of our math and reading offerings. In addition, students can use the device to conduct research on the Internet. All searches will continue to be filtered to support safe searching.

We hope that each child in our district has a relaxing summer, full of learning, inquiry, and most importantly, fun.

Thank you,

Phillip H. Dunn II (and the DLE Team)
