Dear Sir / Madam

Re: Bournemouth University Student Placement 2017/18

We are writing on behalf of the University to thank you for providing work based learning opportunities to our students in the Faculty of Management. We hope this will be a mutually beneficial experience for all involved and would like to outline how the University monitors the progress of the student during placement.

  1. Placement Criteria

Students must complete a minimum of thirty weeks employment, exclusive of any holiday or sickness leave. They should have completed their placement by mid-September 2018 ready to return to University. We should be informed of any problems arising or of any prolonged period of absence due to sickness.

  1. The student’s role during the placement

It is made clear to students that during the placement they will be treated first and foremost as employees and they have a duty to carry out their employer’s requirements in the same way as other employees.

  1. Placement Review Meeting by a University Placement Development Adviser

In the normal course of events the student will receive at least one company visit during the placement and a further ‘remote’ review. The review meetings are primarily intended to monitor the student’s progress during the placement, through discussion both with the student and with the Supervisor. In addition, they provide an opportunity to assess the student’s learning through completion of the relevant tasks in the Professional Development Portfolio / e portfolio

The Placement Development Adviser will inform the student some time in advance of their intention to visit, and the student will only agree the date and time of the visit after consultation with his/her Supervisor, so as to ensure both can meet with the Placement Development Adviser.

  1. The Personal Development Portfolio / E portfolio

The Personal Development Portfolio / E portfolio is a key component of the placement year and the students will be working on this throughout their placement year, in readiness for submission at the end of June 2018.

The purpose of the portfoliois threefold:

-to enable the student to record his/her experience during the placement year

-to direct the student’s learning during the placement through a series of tasks which encourage analysis of his/her experiences as well as considering competence based development

-to enable the student, your organisation and the Placement Development Adviser to assess their development throughout the placement

As the supervisor has an important role in the student’s learning during placement, the portfoliocan provide a focus for constructive discussion between student and supervisor at intervals during the placement. The students are provided with the professional development portfolio hand bookat their pre placement seminar.

  1. The Project

All students have to complete a project during their final yearwith the exception of Finance and Business and Accounting Students, where the project is optional. The topic chosen may relate to a topic arising from the student’s work experience.

We appreciate that the amount of time and help that can be given to a student in this respect may vary; all we would ask is that sympathetic consideration be given to any request from the student.

If you have any concerns about the confidentiality of the information requested by the student, please inform the University where steps will be taken to ensure that only those concerned with the actual assessment of the project have access to it.

  1. Health and Safety Issues

Please see attached letter.
