Freelance Job Description

Job Title: / Freelance Cycling Instructor
Organisation: / Outspoken Training LLP
Salary: / £12 per hour
Location: / You can stipulate an area to work in within our currently delivery areas of Bedford, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Peterborough and Suffolk.

Introduction:
Do you enjoy cycling? Are you a great communicator? Would you like to share your enthusiasm for cycling?
Outspoken Training is recruiting motivated individuals to deliver fun, dynamic, high quality cycle training courses to children and adults. As well as being a competent cyclist, you must be able to communicate effectively and will have some previous experience of and/or a strong interest in coaching or teaching.
Job Purpose:
To deliver fun, inspiring and progressiveNational Standard cycle training courses to children and adults.
Main duties and responsibilities:
  • Plan fun, exciting and progressive sessions.
  • Deliver energetic, fast paced and challenging sessions.
  • Maximise riding time and opportunity for trainees.
  • Ride with groups of trainees between sites.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of off and on-road environments.
  • Reflect on own performance to continuously adapt and improve practice.
  • Complete course paperwork, including checking registers, checking consent forms, course outcomes, etc.
  • Conduct risk assessments of clients, bicycles and training sites, including on and off road locations.
  • Communicate and liaiseeffectively with children, school representatives, parents and clients.
  • Give advice on any relevant cycling matters.
  • Report all course information and feedback promptly to the Outspoken Training office team.

Work patterns and hours:
The role will appeal to someone who is looking for term time work, isn’t reliant on a regular form of income or has other work to supplement their income.Why?:
  • Cycle training courses run in 5 or 6 week blocks during term times with little available work during school holidays.
  • Daily working hours can vary from between two and six hours depending on the number of pupils being trained in each school.
  • Availability of work may depend on the number of participating schools in your area.
We cannot guarantee that we can offer you work every week.

Person Specification

Essential requirements:
Potential instructors must:
  • Be enthusiastic about cycling with an understanding of cycling as a sport, means of transport, leisure pursuit and healthy form of exercise.
  • Be motivated to make a difference, enthusing more people to cycle.
  • Be a regular, competent cyclist able to cycle in a variety of traffic conditions, including busy urban environments.
  • Have an awareness of the Bikeability brand and Outspoken services.
  • Have excellent inter-personal skills to liaise with team members and clients, developing strong relationships, instilling confidence and leaving a positive impression.
  • Be able to prepare, plan, deliver and evaluate cycle training courses.
  • Have proven experience and success working with groups of children and/or adults in a teaching, coaching and/or instructing role or have an interest developing these skills.
  • Ensure high standards of professional practice and quality of instructing.
  • Be punctual, presentable, reliable, trustworthy, honest, friendly, patient and enthusiastic.
  • Have the ability to stay calm in all situations.
  • Be fit and healthy. Our training covers a wide geographical area and you will be standing up whilst working. You need to have good physical fitness and plenty of stamina.
  • Be able to work effectively within a team.
  • Be able to complete course paperwork accurately and on time. This includes using Excel and email.
  • Be able to cope with the paperwork involved in being self-employed as you will be responsible for your own tax and National Insurance.
  • Be available for work four days a week between Mondays and Fridays on a regular basis during school term time.
  • Have other work, or not rely on cycle training as your main source of income.

Desirable requirements:
It is also useful (but not essential) if potential instructors:
  • Are a qualified National Standard cycling instructor. If not, we will arrange for you to attend a 4-day course.
  • Possess an up-to-date first aid qualification (if not, then this will need to be completed within 6 months of starting work with us).
  • Have completed a certificated safeguarding course(if not, then this will need to be completed within 6 months of starting work with us).
  • Can drive and have access to a car.
  • Have good basic bike maintenance skills.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

National Standard Instructor recruitment process (not qualified)
Step 1 / Read the job description and person specification (above) and make sure that what we can offer is what you are looking for. Please contact the Outspoken office if you have any questions.
Step 2 / Return your application form together with an up to date CV.
Step 3 / On the strength of your application against the criteria on the job description and person specification (above), Outspoken Training will decide whether to invite you to an interview at our Cambridge office.
Step 4 / If you are successful at interview, Outspoken Training will make you a provisional agreement to offer you work. This will be dependent on:
  • successful completion of the 4-day National Standard cycling instructor course.
  • two positive references.
  • The DBS check accurately confirms what you told us on your application form and in the interview as well as satisfying our DBS policy.

Step 5 / National Standard Instructor training course:
This is a nationally-recognised qualification and is a four-day course which includes both classroom and practical activities. To work for Outspoken Training, you must achieve a provisional pass for the course.
Outspoken Training will fund the cost of attending the training course but will require a minimum commitment of 70 hours (estimated 5-7 courses) of Bikeability delivery in schools (see declaration) within 6 months of you completing the course.
Step 6 / Post training course:
Following the course, your Instructor Trainer will provide us with feedback on your performance. This will enable us to place you at suitable schools with appropriate instructors to support you whilst you develop. Furthermore, the instructors working with you during your initial training support period, will be able to help prepare you for your post-course assessment which will need to be conducted within 6 months of your instructor training course.

Step 5 / Once you begin delivering training on our behalf, you will be placed on our mentoring scheme aimed at supporting you to develop your delivery and to help improve the service we provide.
