Context

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives. Within the UK, the British Red Cross operates through about 3000 staff and over 30,000 volunteers. Geographically, the UK is organised into 20 operational Areas, which are grouped into 3 Regions.

Scope

The British Red Cross supports the NHS, public event organisers and individuals through the provision of high quality first aid and ambulance services. Our Area teams are responsible for the delivery of this service including recruiting, training and developing all EFA volunteers.

Area People & Learning teams are responsible for ensuring EFA volunteers and staff are fully qualified. Training is delivered thought a network of volunteer tutors – all of whom need to be appropriately trained and supported to deliver training that meets internal and external standards. This training needs to be up to date and includes latest clinical standards. We have a range of EFA technical courses alongside update and refresher sessions and on-going CPD activities for our tutors and volunteers delivering EFA.

Overall Purpose of the Post

This is a capacity-building post helping us ensure that our EFA teams are able to access on-going training and professional development.

Leading a small team of EFA Technical Training Officers (2 members) the post holder will be responsible for coordinating the revision and development of EFA training programmes (including materials and resources), building capacity in Areas by the delivery of EFA tutor training programmes, supporting EFA tutors via development of CPD sessions, attending update meetings and engaging in moderation activities.

The team will be expected to deliver Enhanced First Aid courses volunteers as part of nationally coordinated ‘Enhanced First Aid Skills condensed courses’ as well as local Enhanced First Aid Skills Courses and other EFA training modules in circumstances where Area volunteer tutors are not available.

On top of team coordination and management duties, the post holder will be expected to support in the direct delivery of the EFA training programmes alongside the EFA Training team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate the EFA training team and directly line manage the EFA Technical Training Officers following BRC guidelines and best practices
  2. Responsibility for overseeing the EFA National training budget
  3. To contribute to the development and implementation of an annual calendar of training activities based upon locally and nationally identified needs.
  4. To deliver regular training courses to tutors and volunteers in a range of clinical and non-clinical disciplines including but not limited to: first aid, resuscitation support, trauma management, ambulance skills, duty officer training, airwave radio etc.
  5. To deliver training directly to volunteers in a range of subjects as part of EFA Enhanced skills condensed courses and other EFA training modules or locally in Red Cross Areas in circumstances where local volunteer tutors are not available
  6. Working in conjunction with the EFA service team, both at National and at Area level, lead and coordinate on the development and revision of a high quality and high impact British Red Cross EFA training programmes based on sound educational methodologies.
  7. To support EFA tutors’ development and ensure tutors are equipped with the most recent training materials and knowledge at all times by regularly running update sessions
  8. Working alongside the UK L&D Advisers, moderate tutors through supporting and advising Red Cross Areas in their moderating and quality control activities.
  9. To advise, guide and support areas in organising and implementing IHCD Ambulance Crew award assessments
  10. To maintain own skills and registrations through attending events or acting as BRC ambulance crew in support of the NHS.
  11. To provide ad hoc support to the maintenance of the Red Cross’ registration as an independent ambulance operator including supporting ongoing audit and fact finding programmes in Red Cross Areas.
  12. Build and maintain strong working relationships with Area People & Learning and EFA teams to ensure clear communication and cooperation on the implementation and development of the EFA training programmes
  13. Any other reasonable duties as delegated by the Line Manager.

Person Specification

Education/ training

/   Qualified IHCD ambulance technician or HCPC registered paramedic (highly desirable)
  Additional pre-hospital care qualifications would be beneficial
  Training/assessing qualification is preferred (or willingness to complete a training qualification promptly is essential)
  Relevant and current first aid and/or ambulance aid qualification**

Experience

/   Recent regular operational experience in a clinical care role preferably in the NHS ambulance service (or within Red Cross)**
  Experience of developing and delivery technical training to meet standards**
  Experience of working with volunteers
  Team management and coordination**

Knowledge/ technical skills

/   Current knowledge of first aid and ambulance practice**
