Target group: / All staff who come into contact with vulnerable adults.
No one will be able to access higher levels of safeguarding training until they have completed Level One.

Aims: / To increase basic awareness of safeguarding adults and a basic knowledge of the policy and procedures for making an alert in Newcastle.
Learning outcomes: / ·  Have an increased confidence in their understanding of their own values and attitudes in relation to adult abuse
·  Be aware of and have an understanding of Safeguarding Adults
·  Be able to identify the different categories of abuse
·  Be more familiar with the signs and indications of abuse
·  Be clear about the roles and responsibilities of the alerter as defined within the procedures.

Safeguarding Adults Training

Level One - Alerter training

To compliment the face to face learning that is already available we have created further learning opportunities so you can choose a method of training that suits your specific learning style

·  E-Learning

Available by visiting our website

The course will take approximately 2 hours to complete and you will be given your own password enabling you to log on/off as required. There will be interactive learning, questions and activities for you to work through, finishing with an assessment which will be question based. Upon successful completion a certificate will be generated for you to print off.

·  Work book

Our work book option allows staff to complete Level 1 Training at their own pace with support from a line manager. It is divided into sections and contains clear information and activities. At the end of the book there are a series of assessment questions.

·  In-house

Organisations can provide in-house training at level one. The training must

follow the NSAB Learning and Development Competency Framework. If you

Currently deliver level one training in-house you can send us a copy of your

training and we will help you to ensure that it meets the requirements of the

competency framework. We will provide written confirmation that your training

programme has been reviewed and is in line with the competency standards

required by the Newcastle Adults Safeguarding Board.

If you have a large number of staff who require Level 1 training a member of our Learning and Development team might be able to come to your workplace to deliver a session.

Target group: / People who have a responsibility for receiving concerns, decision-making and informing statutory agencies. This may include: Social Workers, District Nurses, Police Officers, RGN’s, RMN’s, Ward Sisters, Probation Officers, GP’s, Home Managers, Team Leaders, CPN’s.
Participants will have obtained prior knowledge and understanding of safeguarding adults by completing learning equivalent to competencies (1-11) at Level One before attending Level Two training. Prior safeguarding learning will be tested at the start of the Level Two training to ensure that all participants have appropriate knowledge.
Aims: / Increase awareness of legislation, policies and procedures in relation to safeguarding adults. Inform practitioners of their role in recognising and responding to adult abuse.
Learning outcomes: / The course will provide staff with an understanding of:
·  safeguarding adults policy and procedures in Newcastle;
·  what constitutes a safe environment and preventative strategies;
·  capacity, consent and confidentiality;
·  laws & guidance available regarding safeguarding adults

Course: / Level 3a - Safeguarding Adults Risk Assessment and Management Plan (RAMP)
Duration: / Two days
Dates & venues: / Mon 19th and Tues 20th August - Palatine Portacabin

Times: / Two days - 9.30am-4.30pm, both days (registration 15 minutes prior to this)
Target group: / Staff who have organisational or professional responsibility to safeguard vulnerable adults, particularly in the community, and who would partake in risk assessments and protection planning. This will include: Social Workers, Community Nurses, CPN’s, Support Workers, Community Mental Health Workers, Team Leaders
Staff will be expected to have completed Level 2 training prior to attending this course
Aims: / The course aims to equip staff to effectively undertake and coordinate a safeguarding adult risk assessment and safeguarding adult protection plan.
Learning outcomes: / This course will provide staff with an understanding of:
·  the RAMP tool, how and when to use it;
·  patterns, severity and frequency of abuse;
·  risk assessment and risk management;
·  vulnerability factors and likelihood and level of harm;
·  working with the alleged victim and the alleged perpetrator;
·  their roles and responsibilities in respect of the safeguarding adults process and procedures;
·  the importance of working together and information sharing to protect vulnerable adults living at home or in institutional settings;
·  the legal framework, domestic violence and the Mental Capacity Act.

Course: / Level 3b (The Role of the Service Manager)
Duration: / Full day
Dates & venues: / Thursday 19th September - Palatine Portacabin, Westerhope
Times: / 9.30am – 4.30 pm (registration 15 minutes prior to this)
Target group: / Managers of care homes, hospital wards, day resources, supported accommodation, domiciliary care services. All registered managers
Staff will be expected to have completed Level 2 training prior to attending this course
Aims: / The course aims to equip managers of direct services to be confident in their role of preventing and responding to abuse.
Learning outcomes: / This course will provide staff with an understanding of:
·  the national and legal context including the ISA;
·  roles and responsibilities in relation to the safeguarding adults process and procedures including the service manager’s role;
·  how to participate effectively within a safeguarding adult strategy and protection plan meeting;
·  the roles of others in safeguarding adults work e.g. police, CSCI, HSC; and
·  the role of the manager.

Target group: / Staff who have a responsibility to gather information as part
of the safeguarding adults process. This may be at alert
stage or as part of subsequent investigations or in
completing the Risk Assessment and Management Plan
(RAMP). This could be: Social Workers, Community Nurses,
Key Workers, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Community
Mental Health Workers, Managers, Team Leaders.
Staff will be expected to have completed Level 2 training prior to attending this course
Aims: / To improve skills in gathering information and interview
techniques as part of the safeguarding adults process.
Learning outcomes: / By the end of the course, staff should be able to:
·  Identify appropriate responses to disclosures of
information
·  Understand methods for effective information gathering
·  Gather information from alleged victims and alleged
perpetrators
·  Understand the differing nature of responses

Course: / Safeguarding Adults for Trustees/Management Committee
Duration: / 3 hours
Dates, Times & venues: / Tuesday 24th September 2013 - MEA House

Target group: / Trustees or Management Committee members of charities or community and voluntary organisations (In particular those charities or community and voluntary organisations that provide a service to, or work with vulnerable adults).
Aims: / To increase awareness of safeguarding adults and the role of Trustees or Management Committee members in the safeguarding adults procedures. The training will also provide practical advice and guidance to support organisations with safeguarding adults.
Session outline: / 1.  Basic principles of safeguarding adults
Who is a vulnerable adult, the different categories of abuse and their signs and indicators.
2.  Multi-agency safeguarding adults policy and procedures
How concerns about abuse or neglect are alerted and what happens next.
3.  Capacity, consent and confidentiality
The Mental Capacity Act and it’s relevance to safeguarding adults.
4.  Role of trustees/management committee members in safeguarding adults work
The ways in which trustees/management committee members may be involved in the safeguarding adults process and wider responsibilities in ensuring the organisation is safeguarding vulnerable adults.
5.  Your policy and procedures
Advice and guidance on what should be included in an individual organisation’s policy and procedure.
6.  Prevention
Good practice in reducing the likelihood of abuse (including an update on CRB & vetting and barring schemes).
7.  Additional support
Services, tools, people who can provide extra support.

Course: / Safeguarding Adults Thematic Workshop: Alerter decision making and Threshold Guidance
Duration: / ½ day

9.30-12.00
Target group: / All staff who are responsible for raising alerts on a multi-agency basis.
This may include: Social Workers, District Nurses, Police Officers, RGN’s, RMN’s, Ward Sisters, Probation Officers, GP’s, Home Managers, senior workers, Team Leaders, CPN’s.
Attendees must have completed Level One and Level Two training in order to access the workshop.
Aims: / This one off bespoke session aims to equip practitioners with the skills, knowledge and confidence in decision making at alerter stage.
Session outline: / ·  Increased confidence when deciding what constitutes a safeguarding adults alerts
·  Awareness of the regional Threshold Guidance document and how it can support practice
·  Clear understanding of multi-agency reporting procedures
·  Understanding of multi-agency roles and responsibilities in relation to alerting
·  Understand the procedures for challenging a decision and how to access further support and guidance
