Ranger Programs

* Cedar Creek and Belle Grove in a Box – A Park Overview A 30 minute program on the history and settlement of the Valley, the Battle of Cedar Creek and the Civil War’s impact. This interactive program uses the surrounding landscape features and props (taken from a box) to “create” the park and tell its many stories. Meet on Belle Grove’sfront lawn.

* Battle of Cedar Creek Tour A two-hour guided tour, using a car-caravan system (visitors follow the ranger’s vehicle), covering the Battle of Cedar Creek in a chronological fashion. Meet at the National Park Service Visitor Contact Station (7712 Main Street, Middletown, VA 22645).

* “To Battlefield and Beyond” War Comes to the Shenandoah Valley This 45 minute program examines the many impacts of the war on the Valley. Meet at the Hupp’s Hill Civil War Park.

* 1862or 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign in a Box –A 30 minute overview of eitherthe 1862 or 1864Shenandoah Valley. Meet on Belle Grove’sfront lawn.

*1862Shenandoah Valley Campaign in a Box (at Kernstown Battlefield Association) A 30 minute overview of the 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Presented at the Kernstown Battlefield Association (610 Battle Park Drive, Winchester, VA).

* Kneading in Silence: A Glimpse Into the Life of Judah the Enslaved Cook This 30 minute program explores the story of one slave at Belle Grove. Meet at Belle Grove.

* Battlefield Series Programs This series of special two-hour ranger programs will highlight numerous park sites and resources associated with the battle. Offered on select Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. (see for a complete schedule).

Special Events

*September 9 Battlefield Series: Attack and Flank: Battle of Third Winchester Walking Tour(5:00 pm) To destroy Confederate Gen. Jubal Early’s Army of the Valley, Union Gen. Philip Sheridan attached with two corps near Winchester on the morning of September 19, 1864. This ferocious battle was not decided until Sheridan unleashed a flank attack late in the day. Join Ranger Rick Ashbacker to walk the battlefield and see how this battle affected the outcome of the Civil War. Meet at the Third Winchester Visitor Center Parking Lot (541 Redbud Road, Winchester, VA).

* September 15 History at Sunset: The Bayonet Charge of the 8th Vermont and 12th Connecticut at 3rd Winchester(6:00 pm) One of the most critical moments of the Battle of Third Winchester came during struggle for the Middle Field. Join Ranger Jeff Driscoll has he follows in the footsteps of the 8th Vermont and 12th Connecticut during their famous charge across this field on September 19, 1864. The program will then conclude at the Winchester National Cemetery where many of the soldiers of these two regiments are now buried. Meet at the Sheetz convenience store (1683 Berryville Pike, Winchester, Virginia), before visitors take a short drive to the Middle Field to start the program.

* September 16 Friendly Fire, Murderous Fire: The Fight for Middle Field (2:00 pm) Presented by Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation Chairman Nick Picerno, this hour-long program will cover the ferocious struggle for Middle Field during the Third Battle of Winchester (September 19, 1864), where the fighting was so intense and costly that it was later called “that basin of hell.” Meet at the fence line in the Middle Field. * September 23 Smithsonian Museum Day Live! (10:00 – 4:00) Come out to Belle Grove for Smithsonian Magazine's Museum Day Live! Free Admission. Tour the Manor house, grounds and slave cemetery, watch the Blacksmith at work, and enjoy two National Park Service programs at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. For more information see:

* September 23 Fisher’s Hill Bus Tour with Scott Patchan (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) Historian and author Scott Patchan will lead this in-depth bus tour of the Fisher’s Hill battlefield. * September 26 – October 1 National Sheep Dog Trails at Belle Grove Join Belle Grove as we host the 2017 U.S. Border Collie Handlers Association's (USBCHA) National Sheepdog Finals. Only 150 champion sheep dogs and their handlers will qualify for this event that will crown the North American Champion. The event will begin with open preliminary rounds Tuesday, September 26 - Friday, September 29, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Those that qualify will compete in the Saturday semi-finals, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. The top dogs and handlers will complete in the finals on Sunday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Food and merchandise vendors will be on the property during the entire event.
