Syllabus

Proficient Visual Art is a more in-depth approach to the study of art processes and techniques, aesthetic issues, art criticism and art history. The teacher will help students set goals for their work and growth as a young artist. Students will begin to develop their own personal, expressive voice as an artist. Students will become familiar with careers in the art field, educational programs and opportunities and will develop work habits of professionals. Students will also continue to gain knowledge of the arts in relation to culture, history and other disciplines through visual verbal and written avenues. Work in this course will culminate in a portfolio based on technical quality, personal style, direction and its intended purpose. Projects are subject to change depending on student learning needs and availability of resources.

The final exam will consist of a portfolio review as well as work submitted for the assessment of student work (ASW) state evaluation. There are no exemptions from the exam.

Grading:

Participation / effort: 20%- Class participation and effort continue to be of importance as quality work is linked to a student’s ability to focus and manage his/her time. Part of developing skills as a professional is to be aware of one’s environment, how they fit into that environment and take care of it.

Projects: 60%- This is a studio based class. For that reason, projects are also very important. Projects should be completed and turned in on time. Late work will result in grade penalties. Absence on the date that the assignment is due is not an excuse for not turning in the work.

Homework and writing assignments and tests: 20% Students will have regular writing assignments, art critiques and 2 gallery visits to complete this semester. Homework assignments will complement the assigned projects.

Final exam 25% of final grade.
