RAMSEY RECREATION COMMISSION

MINUTES OF MEETING

JANUARY 19, 2009

The regular meeting of the Ramsey Recreation Commission was called to order at 7:32 p.m. Present were Mrs. Grissoni, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Malvasi, Mr. Patterson, Ms. Re’, Mr. Sebastian, and Mr. Wittmann, Commissioners, and Recreation Supervisor Solarino. Dr. Iorio, Mr. Sweeney, and Council Liaison Siemsen were absent.

Mayor Botta was present to swear in Mrs. Grissoni and Mr. Sebastian.

Mr. Solarino conducted the election of chairman and vice-chairman, with the following results. Mr. Patterson nominated Mrs. Grissoni as chairman, seconded by Mrs. Malvasi. There were no further nominations. Mrs. Grissoni nominated Mr. Patterson as vice-chairman, seconded by Ms. Re’. There were no further nominations. Mrs. Grissoni and Mr. Patterson were unanimously elected chairman and vice-chairman. Mr. Solarino expressed his gratitude to the Commissioners for their kindness upon the recent death of his father.

MINUTES

Ms. Re’ moved that the minutes of the November 17, 2008 meeting be accepted as received, seconded by Mr. Patterson, and passed.

ACTIVITY REPORTS (OLD/NEW BUSINESS)

The council liaison for 2009 is Mr. Siemsen.

Mr. Patterson brought the updated flyer for the adult soccer program. In 2008 there were five teams, approximately one hundred participants. The program is for Ramsey residents only, which will be added to the flyer.

He proposed a fishing derby and a trip to Radio City Music Hall for the Christmas show as 2009 inclusions. Mr. Wittmann will check with the Country Club regarding the fishing derby.

Mr. Sebastian provided updates regarding fall baseball and the football program. The Spartans won the Super Bowl. Wrestling is going well, with no injuries thus far. The participants are having fun. Regarding the basketball program, officiating is not an issue. There are 355 basketball participants, including those in a Challenger league. The program runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Smith, from 8 a.m. to noon at Hubbard (fourth graders), and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dater.

Ms. Re’ suggested a skiing/snowboarding trip as an addition to the Commission’s schedule of activities. There was discussion about those winter activities as well as skating in the borough. Further research will be done.

Mrs. Malvasi noted that the new Easter bunny is gearing up for his annual appearance at the Easter egg hunt. She suggested a teen bowling night.

Mrs. Grissoni suggested a spring run. She will check on another Atlantic City trip.

REPORT OF THE RECREATION SUPERVISOR

Mr. Solarino reported that the borough has a grant which will pay for two backstops at Finch Park.

He has met with representatives of the adult softball leagues.

Activity dates for 2009 were established, including Saturday, April 4-Baseball/Softball Opening Day, Saturday, April 11-Easter egg hunt, Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 31-summer camp, Saturday, September 12-Ramsey Day dog show, Saturday, September 19-Ramsey Run, and Saturday, October 31-Halloween parade and costume contest. A date needs to be set for the trip to a Yankee game.

The February meeting has been rescheduled from Monday, February 16th to Monday, February 23rd.

REPORT OF THE RECREATION COORDINATOR

Bowling sign-ups are underway. The programs will start on Wednesday, February 18th, and Friday, February 20th. The final numbers for the two bowling programs will be available in February.

There being no further business to come before the Commission, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m. upon motion by Mrs. Malvasi, seconded by Mr. Sebastian, and passed.
