6. / Brief Resume of the intended work:
6.1 Need for the study
Self esteem is a complex system of belief about ourselves. Self esteem can fail to satisfy one’s deep needs for competence, relationships and autonomy [1]. Competence is not identified with any particular trait or pattern of personal resources. It is identified with the ability to mobilize and coordinate these resources in such a way that opportunities are created and the potentials or resources in the environment are realized for a good developmental outcome [2]. Studies show that adolescence have high self esteem when they perform competently in the domains important to the self. Hence it would be useful to investigate the relationship between Social Competence and Self Esteem among Adolescents.
6.2 Review of Literature
·  Smulczyk, M and Pokropek, A. [3] conducted a study on Self Efficacy, Self Esteem vs Social Competence of Polish Adolescents .The result showed that self efficacy is a strong predictor of social competence and there exists a positive correlation between self esteem, self efficacy and social competence.
·  Eiden, R D, Colder C. et al.[4] conducted a study on A longitudinal study of social competence among children of alcoholic and non alcoholic parents: role of parental psychopathology, parental warmth, and self-regulation. Results showed that there was a direct association between fathers' alcohol diagnosis and father reports of social competence, and between fathers' depression and teacher reports of social competence.

·  Sun, Wei, S. [5] conducted a study on Family relationships and social competence during late adolescence: a longitudinal study. The results arethere were also notable gender differences in family relationships and social competence over time. Taken together, these results suggest that males and females have different experiences in separating from the family. For males, after leaving home, family ties gradually diminish, for females, family ties are more strongly maintained. However, for all students, there were positive correlations between family relationships and social competence during both time periods.

·  Mruck, C.[6] model of self esteem conceptualise defensive self esteem enhancement. The two axes within the model are competence, which refers to skill for competing tasks, and worthiness, which refers to the affective experience of having a sense of worth and cognitive judgement that one has worth. Within the model, people with high levels of competence and worth have authentic high self esteem, while low self esteem , negativism and depression are associated with low levels of competence and worth.
