6.0 BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK

6.1 INTRODUCTION

“ALL MEN BY NATURE DESIRE KNOWLEDGE”

-  Aristotle.

The first half of the twentieth century is the most important revolutionary period in human history. The whole look of the old world has changed. Along with general upheaval, for independence and social resurgence profession have changed and the nursing profession did not log behind. At that time nurses had simple mechanical procedures. Nursing profession began to take roof in Indian society, as a means of subsistence for helpless widows, divorced or forsaken wives and spinsters, mostly belonging to economically poorer sections in the society. The sentimental and mechanical world has not changed into a scientific technical automation. The nursing profession has to keep pace with highly specialized and constantly transforming medical profession, acting as its vital supportive wing. 1

The nursing profession has been changing dramatically over the last fifty years. Advances are evident in the scope of nursing practice and in nursing education and these advances are in the professional direction. Stereotype views and blind superstitions can harm any profession and nursing is not an exception. This will distort the public concept and affect the quality. It will also discourage number of people from entering the profession and also affect the decision of policymakers in the allocation of resources for the nursing profession and education.2

Today there are numerous vocations and occupations along with nursing profession available to an individual to choose. But vocational interest and choice of a career do not appear all of a sudden. They appear as a result of a developmental process.3

Nursing is one of the vocations that is developed out of the social needs and has a vital role in building health, preventing diseases and caring for the sick and the disabled. A nursing is defined as something noble which nomishes health for all who fosters quality of life of a person usually women are trained to care the sick or decrepit.4

In the early eras, nursing as vocation grew under the religious organizations where women cared for the sick, destitutes and orphans. This history of nursing development reveals that nursing grew as a profession grew out of needs arising from devastations caused by war, where women had rendered selfless services and contributed much towards raising nursing into a profession. Therefore nursing has been usually seen mainly as a women’s work.5

Historically the socio-cultural atmosphere in India was not conductive to the adoption of any occupational role by women except within the home. As Virgina Henderson states, :”In countries such as India, where women led sheltered lives, men performed the functions that necessitated touching the bodies of adult males” Moreover “Traditional Social barriers often reinforced by religious opinions prevented women folk from joining the profession”.6

Like many other professions, nursing in the world has undergone considerable change over the past two decades. The profession of nursing as it stands today derives its inspiration mainly from the example set by Florence nightingale, who organized a nursing service to relieve the sufferings of the soldiers in the war which was adopted and developed in all parts of the world in later times.7

Nursing has changed significantly in India as it has received national and International attention and recognition since independence. Many trendsetting developments took place in India after Independence in the year 1948when initial planning of the world health organization suggested a large programme of assistance for developing nursing education in the country.8

Although there is considerable increase in the number of nursing personnel, the demand for professional nurses to meet the expanding health needs of the country continues to increase.9

With the” Health for all by 2000A.D.” policy being actively implemented by the Government the health Services are expanding at a tremendous speed in the country so more nursing personnel are being needed to meet the increasing demands in providing comprehensive healthcare to the population of the country.10

Nurse’s preparation has become professionalized. Standards have been set by individual nursing schools; the nursing associations and the nursing council of India. Nursing today does not imply caring for sick only but it also involved promotion of individual and prevention of diseases. Professional nurses are working in the community and in the hospitals, using highly technology to provide sophisticated care. They are also required to work within an institution in teaching or in research, thus making their scope wider, besides preparing future nurses and working towards improvements of better health care.11

6.2 NEED FOR THE STUDY

According to world health organisation “Shortage of Nurses” has become a globally estimates a shortage of almost 4.3 million nurses worldwide reported to be the result of decades of under investment in Basic B.Sc nursing education training. Nursing shortage is a serious issue in the United States and many other countries around the world. 12

The number of nurses has increased considerably in the recent years. But the percentage of young women going into professional nursing courses is not increasing proportionately to the number of women entering colleges and to the number of patients in hospitals.13

The supply of nurses is affected by the career choice. So the number of people who plan to become nurses can be seen as a result of a process of selection between alternative occupations available before them. Factors which operate the choice of occupation are both internal and external. Internal factors can be conscious unconscious. External factors are economic, sociological and educational influences. All factors seem to agree that vocational development is complex and closely related to the total process of growth and long time development process reflecting self concept, which needs structure and personality characteristics of the particular individual. Each person is faced with an array of occupational openings which he or she can enter. Each occupation offers varying potentialities for the satisfaction of certain basic needs and differs in degree to which it is compatible with various types of personalities. Some choose nursing and reject the other; some reject nursing and choose alternative occupations. This is for various reasons that include aptitude, employment opportunities and professional growth. The interactions of several factors make a person to select or reject a particular occupation or a career. Prempasricha (1976) says, “Individual choice is limited by many factors like education, socio economic status, of the community to which the individual belongs etc.14

However attracting enough and capable students into nursing from a common pool of talented students which also supplies the other professions is one aspect, the other more critical one is vocational preference of the student herself. It is a highly complex process and is one of the aspects of the total vocational development of an individual.15

Supper considers that vocational development is a wholesome process which is not a compromised but is a synthesis, involving the personal needs and economic resources, social demands and the resources of the culture. This process involves stages of growth, exploration, establishment, maintenance and decline.16

As a profession nursing has developed a lot when compare to the past and still it is developing in par with advanced technical courses. To enter such competent discipline, the students must have basic knowledge about it. This helps the nursing field to have efficient nursing leaders, best clinical specialists and researchers. The number of students entering nursing career / profession is not sufficient to meet the increasing demand and increasing health needs. Some investigative studies were conducted abroad in this filed. But very few studies are done in India. To the best of the investigator’s knowledge no such study was done in Karnataka. Since research in this area has not received sufficient attention in nursing, the need was felt for the present study with a view to explore the relationship between certain selected factors, and Rs. 3.000 crore for programmes to train Basic B.Sc nurses. The need to train 1.4 lakh B.Sc nursing students to reduce the shortage of nurses. This study will help the researcher in evaluating the student’s knowledge and attitude towards Basic B.Sc nursing course among students of selected junior colleges. Hence this study was undertaken.17
